GREAT GRANDMA'S SOUR CREAM DROP COOKIES

Great Grandma's Sour Cream Drop Cookies image

This recipe was on a card tucked into my mom's recipe box; it's pretty similar to a number of variations that seem to be from the 1930s. A note said "flavor with whatever you like" and of all the flavors I played around with, I thought lemon zest balanced the sweet dough the best. These bake up into tender little cakes that make a great base for whoopie pies. Once baked, they freeze well (thaw for an hour or so on the counter to eat), but start losing their tenderness after more than one day at room temperature.

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 ⅓ cups white sugar
¼ cup shortening
¼ cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup full-fat sour cream
1 large lemon, zested
2 large eggs
3 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
¾ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon baking powder

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Line two rimmed baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Cream sugar, shortening, and butter together in the bowl of a stand mixer on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 1 minute.
  • Mix in sour cream and lemon zest on low speed until no streaks of sour cream remain. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing on medium-low just until there are no streaks of yolk, and scraping down the sides of the bowl between additions. Add flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder all at once and mix just to combine.
  • Drop by heaping tablespoons on the prepared baking sheets, about 2 inches apart.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the tops are puffy and spring back when lightly touched with a finger, about 10 minutes. They should be light golden, with occasional spots of pale golden brown.

GRANDMA GERTIE'S OLD FASHIONED SUGAR COOKIES

Grandma Gertie's Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies image

My grandma used to make these. She made huge cookies and we used to get so excited when we knew she was making cookies! These have been a favorite for years. The sour cream makes the cookies soft and the extra extract makes them stand out from "regular" sugar cookies. Sometimes I substitute lemon extract for the almond extract.

NORWEGIAN SOUR CREAM COOKIES RECIPE - (3.9/5)

Norwegian Sour Cream Cookies Recipe - (3.9/5) image

Provided by Nicole

Number Of Ingredients 10

1/3 cup butter, softened
2/3 cup sugar
1 egg, beaten
1/3 cup sour cream (not commercial sour cream, but cream or heavy cream that has gone sour or bad)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 2/3 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
Cinnamon Sugar: Combine a few tablespoons of sugar and about 1-2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Mix together your wet ingredients (butter, sugar, egg, sour cream and vanilla) until smooth. Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Drop rounded spoonfuls onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Dip the bottom of a small glass into your bowl of cookie dough or smear a little dough on the glass. Dip the glass into cinnamon sugar. With the glass coated in sugar, lightly tap down each ball of dough on the sheet leaving a dusting of cinnamon sugar on the cookie. Continue with remaining dough. I sometimes use a spoon and sprinkle just a little more cinnamon sugar on each one as well. Bake for 10 minutes in a 400 degree fahrenheit oven.

Tips:

  • For a softer cookie, chill the dough for at least 30 minutes before baking.
  • To make the cookies chewier, reduce the baking time by 1-2 minutes.
  • For a crispier cookie, bake for an additional 1-2 minutes.
  • If you don't have sour cream, you can substitute plain yogurt or buttermilk.
  • Be sure to use cold butter when making the dough, as this will help the cookies hold their shape.
  • Don't overmix the dough, as this can make the cookies tough.
  • If you want a sweeter cookie, you can add an extra 1/4 cup of sugar to the dough.
  • For a more tangy cookie, you can add an extra 1/4 cup of lemon juice or vinegar to the dough.
  • You can also add your favorite mix-ins to the cookies, such as chocolate chips, nuts, or dried fruit.

Conclusion:

Grandma's Sour Cream Cookies are a delicious and easy-to-make treat that are perfect for any occasion. With their soft and chewy texture, tangy flavor, and endless variations, these cookies are sure to be a hit with everyone who tries them. So next time you're looking for a sweet and satisfying snack, give Grandma's Sour Cream Cookies a try. You won't be disappointed!
