SWEET AND SOUR MEATBALLS FROM HEINZ
This zesty meatball recipe is always a hit with any crowd. The basic, two-ingredient sauce can be switched up by simply combining Heinz Chili Sauce with any sweet spread such as peach jam, grape jelly or mango chutney. And, for the ultimate shortcut, you can use prepared meatballs.

ALWAYS PERFECT SWEET AND SOUR MEATBALLS
This recipe has gotten me out of innumerable kitchen emergencies, including unexpected guests, finicky guests, and kids on a hunger strike. It has become so popular in our world that many guests visiting (especially from out of town) request it in advance before they get here. Similarly, many young brides have asked for this recipe as their wedding gift (don't worry--they got a regular gift too!). It can be doubled, tripled, etc., freezes and reheats well, and can handle an almost infinite number of variations (some of which I will include below).

Steps:
- Mix together beef, garlic powder, onion powder, egg, and matzo meal.
- Form into small balls and set aside.
- Pour chili sauce into medium saucepan.
- Refill bottle with water, shake well, and add to pot.
- Add the brown sugar and lemon juice, and mix.
- Bring sauce to a boil.
- Taste and adjust amounts of lemon juice and brown sugar to taste.
- Drop in meatballs.
- Return to boil, cover, and simmer for at least 20 minutes (but you can leave it on for much longer if you forget).
- VARIATION #1:For chili sauce, you can substitute either tomato sauce or tomato juice or diced canned tomatoes, and adjust the sweeteners and water accordingly. You just want it to be a saucy consistency, not too thick or thin. If you use plain tomato juice or sauce, you can add in some garlic powder or other seasoning. The sky is the limit. But, do NOT use spaghetti sauce!
- VARIATION #2:For matzo meal you can substitute bread crumbs, oatmeal, a little flour, or any other binding agent.
- VARIATION #3:For brown sugar you can substitute real maple syrup, sugar, honey, grape jelly, or any other real sweetener. (Do not use nutrisweet or any other artificial sweetener!).

Steps:
- Put all the ingredients but meatballs into the crockpot and mix well.
- Add the meatballs and stir to coat well.
- Put the crockpot on low and let cook for 4 hours on low (if you use thawed meatballs, it'll only take a couple of hours in the crockpot, instead).
- Serve, standing back so you don't get trampled by the rush of the crowd.
- Note: We've tried other preserves and jam than grape jelly, but the sauce simply didn't taste as good; we're sticking with plain, old grape jelly from now on and will be happy with it. Also, you can use Lil Smokies or sliced smoked sausage instead of the meatballs - a lot of folks use the same sauce for either and both ways are tasty! :)
- Note 2: the above makes a lot of sauce, a good deal of which will be left over when the meatballs have been eaten. I've found that having a *lot* of sauce is of real benefit when making meatballs in the crockpot - the meat remains nice and moist.

Tips:
- Use lean ground beef: This will help to keep the meatballs from becoming too greasy.
- Add some bread crumbs to the meatball mixture: This will help to bind the ingredients together and make the meatballs more tender.
- Season the meatball mixture well: Use a combination of salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. You can also add other spices, such as chili powder or cumin, to taste.
- Brown the meatballs before simmering them: This will help to give them a nice flavor and color.
- Use a good quality grape jelly: This will make a big difference in the flavor of the meatballs.
- Simmer the meatballs in the grape jelly sauce for at least 30 minutes: This will allow the flavors to meld together and the meatballs to become tender.
- Serve the meatballs over rice or noodles: This will make a complete and satisfying meal.
Conclusion:
These grape jelly meatballs are a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal. They are also a great way to use up leftover grape jelly. So next time you are looking for a new and exciting way to cook meatballs, give this recipe a try. You won't be disappointed!
