HARRIET'S COOKIES (BROWN SUGAR SHORTBREAD BARS WITH CHOCOLATE)
My mother has been making these since I was a child. I had no idea how easy they were until I asked her for the recipe. She got the recipe back in the 1960's from her friend Harriet. Few ingredients and delicious!

BROWN SUGAR BARS
This recipe was on top of a shoebox full of recipes my grandmother had clipped from magazines. I remember these fondly -- always coupled with a glass of cold milk. Full of old-fashioned flavor!

Tips:
- To achieve the perfect texture for your shortbread bars, use a combination of butter and shortening. This will create a flaky and crumbly crust.
- Chilling the dough before baking is crucial. This will help the bars hold their shape and prevent them from spreading too much in the oven.
- Be sure to press the dough firmly into the pan before baking. This will help the bars stay together and prevent them from falling apart.
- Don't overbake the bars. They should be golden brown around the edges but still soft and chewy in the center.
- For a richer flavor, use dark brown sugar instead of light brown sugar.
- Feel free to add your favorite mix-ins to the dough, such as chopped nuts, dried fruit, or chocolate chips.

Harriet's Cookies Brown Sugar Shortbread Bars with Chocolate are a delightful treat that is perfect for any occasion.
