CROCK-POT HUNGARIAN BEEF GOULASH

Crock-Pot Hungarian Beef Goulash image

I had been searching for a good goulash recipe for quite some time, and finally made my own from bits of several others. No potatoes in this one (my crock-pot usually doesn't get them tender enough). It will need salt at the end or at the table - I cook with very little salt and add it at the end because many of my friends need low-sodium food. My SO has been telling people 'It was GOOD goulash' for days since I made it. Enjoy!

HUNGARIAN BEEF GOULASH AKA "PORKOLT"

Hungarian Beef Goulash Aka

I took the original Hungarian version that my parents taught me, and added my own flare. I hope you like it as much as I do. For best results, use real Hungarian Paprika found in grocery or international food stores. This dish is best served with noodles, and preferably a traditional Hungarian cabbage salad.

Tips for Making the Best Hungarian Beef Goulash:

  • Choose high-quality beef: Use a flavorful cut of beef, such as chuck roast or short ribs. Look for meat that is well-marbled, as this will help keep the goulash moist and flavorful.
  • Brown the beef in batches: Don't overcrowd the pot when browning the beef. Brown the meat in batches to ensure that it gets a nice, even sear. This will help develop flavor and prevent the meat from steaming.
  • Use a good quality paprika: Paprika is a key ingredient in Hungarian goulash, so it's important to use a good quality variety. Look for Hungarian paprika, which has a deep red color and a slightly smoky flavor.
  • Simmer the goulash low and slow: Allow the goulash to simmer for at least 1-2 hours, or until the beef is fall-apart tender. This will help the flavors to develop and deepen.
  • Serve with traditional accompaniments: Hungarian goulash is traditionally served with egg noodles, mashed potatoes, or dumplings. You can also serve it with a side of sour cream and pickled vegetables.
