8 medium peeled apples, cut into 1-inch chunks that are 1/4 - 1/2 inch thick (about 10 cups chunks)
1/2 cup (100g) packed light or dark brown sugar
1/4 cup (31g) all-purpose flour (spoon & leveled)
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup (94g) all-purpose flour (spoon & leveled)
3/4 cup (150g) packed light or dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup (1 stick; 115g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
1 cup (80g) old-fashioned whole oats
optional: salted caramel and vanilla ice cream for serving

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking pan. Any 4 quart baking dish works.
  • Mix all of the filling ingredients together in a large bowl, then spread into the baking pan.
  • Whisk the flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon together in a medium bowl. Cut in the butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture becomes super crumbly. Stir in the oats. Sprinkle over filling.
  • Bake for 45 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the fruit juices are bubbling around the edges. Remove from the oven, place on a wire rack, and allow to cool for at least 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm, room temperature, or cold- plain or with salted caramel and/or vanilla ice cream.
  • Cover leftovers and store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

CARLA'S APPLE CRISP

Carla's Apple Crisp image

This apple crisp was brought to our house for dessert by a dear friend named Carla. I had always had an aversion to cooked apples, but I wanted to be polite so I tried it. This has been one of my favorite desserts since then. I was sooo bummed out because it got lost in the move to South Africa. I had lost contact with Carla as well. Then 2 weeks ago, 3 1/2 years later, I FOUND IT! In that one box that was full of "junk" that was so important to bring with us, but not important enough to go through for 3 + years! So here it is:

### 1. **Choose the Right Apples:** Opt for a blend of apples, such as Granny Smith, Braeburn, and Honeycrisp, for a variety of textures and flavors. 2. **Maintain Apple Crispiness:** To keep your apples crisp in the filling, toss them with a mixture of sugar, flour, and spices before adding them to the baking dish. 3. **Use Fresh Lemon Juice:** A squeeze of lemon juice helps prevent the apples from browning and adds a touch of brightness to the filling. 4. **Achieve Golden-Brown Topping:** Create a streusel topping with a mix of flour, oats, brown sugar, and butter. For a nuttier flavor, incorporate walnuts or pecans. 5. **Control Crisp Sweetness:** Adjust the amount of sugar in the topping and filling based on your desired sweetness level. 6. **Bake until Golden Brown:** Bake the apple crisp until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. This usually takes about 45-50 minutes. 7. **Serve with Your Favorites:** Serve the apple crisp warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a drizzle of caramel sauce. ### With a combination of sweet, tart apples, a crispy oat topping, and a hint of spice, this apple crisp is a classic dessert that offers a delightful blend of textures and flavors. Experiment with different apple varieties and topping ingredients to create your own unique twist on this timeless recipe. Whether you enjoy it as a warm comfort food on a chilly evening or as a special treat for gatherings, this apple crisp is sure to impress.
