THREE-LAYER BEEF CASSEROLE

Three-Layer Beef Casserole image

A great, easy to make ground beef casserole, taken from Sunset's Potluck cookbook and slightly modified to our liking. Everyone I've made it for loves it. Easily fills a 9x12 casserole dish and will feed a large family or group.

Provided by Koriander

Categories     Meat

Time 1h30m

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 1/2 lbs ground sirloin
3 garlic cloves, pressed
1 large brown onion, finely chopped
2 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce
2 tablespoons dry basil
1 (10 ounce) package spinach fettuccine
1 (4 ounce) package sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup milk

Steps:

  • NOTE: Extra lean ground beef may be used in place of ground sirloin.
  • Crumble ground beef into a wide frying pan over medium heat, cooking and stirring until browned.
  • Discard all excess fat and stir in garlic, onion, tomato sauce, and basil.
  • Reduce heat, cover loosely, and simmer for 30 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, in a 6- to 8-quart pan, cook pasta according to package directions, until just tender to bite - do not overcook.
  • Spoon meat mixture into a 9x12 casserole dish.
  • Top evenly with pasta.
  • Sprinkle cheddar cheese over pasta.
  • In a bowl, mix together cream cheese, sour cream, and milk until smooth.
  • Pour over the pasta using a knife to seperate pasta so it can drizzle down inside. (At this point you may cover and refrigerate for one day).
  • Bake at 350 for 40-45 minutes. If refrigerated, bake up to one hour.

Tips:

  • Choose the right noodles: Wide noodles, such as fettuccine or lasagna noodles, work best for this dish. They will hold the sauce and meat well.
  • Cook the noodles al dente: This means cooking them until they are tender but still have a slight bite to them. Overcooked noodles will become mushy and ruin the dish.
  • Brown the beef: Browning the beef adds flavor and depth to the dish. Be sure to brown the beef in a hot skillet over medium-high heat. Don't overcrowd the pan, or the beef will steam instead of brown.
  • Use a flavorful sauce: The sauce is what really makes this dish special. Use a sauce that you love and that will complement the beef and noodles. Options include a simple tomato sauce, a creamy Alfredo sauce, or a hearty Bolognese sauce.
  • Layer the ingredients correctly: When layering the ingredients, start with a layer of noodles, then a layer of sauce, then a layer of meat, and so on. Repeat until all of the ingredients have been used up.
  • Bake until bubbly: Bake the dish in a preheated oven until it is bubbly and hot. This usually takes about 30 minutes.
  • Let it rest: Before serving, let the dish rest for a few minutes. This will allow the flavors to meld and the noodles to absorb the sauce.

Conclusion:

Layered beef noodle bake is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal. It is also a great way to use up leftover beef. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can create a hearty and flavorful dish that the whole family will love.
