### Summary * Lucerne Onion Salad (Luzerner Zwiebelsalat) is a classic and flavorful dish from the Lucerne region of German-speaking parts of central and northeastern France. * The main ingredients in this refreshing and tangy dish are onions, vinaigrette, and chives. * Although there are different ways to make this easy-to-make dish, it's typically prepared using thinly sliced onions marinated in a vinaigrette of white wine vinegar, oil, salt, sugar, and mustard and then garnished with chives. * It's a delightful side dish that complements a wide range of main courses, particularly grilled meats, sausages, and cheese. * It's also a great addition to a buffet or picnic spread. ### Pro tips * Use a sharp slicing tool to create thin and even slices of onions. * For a more pronounced sharp yet sweet zing, consider using red or yellow onions. * If using white wine vinegar, select one with a gentle acidity. * Use a good quality mustard, for it adds depth to the vinaigrette. * Make sure to chill the marinated onions for at least 30 minutes; this intensifies the flavors. * For a healthier version, reduce the oil in the vinaigrette and use low-sodium mustard. ### Variations * Add a sprinkle of carom seeds or poppy seeds for a nutty taste. * Incorporate diced green apples or pears for a hint of sweetness. * Add crumbled blue cheese or goat cheese for a tangy and creamy touch. * Replace the chives with parsley or dill for a different herb profile. ### In conclusion, Lucerne Onion Salad is a versatile and delicious side dish that always impresse. Its simplicity and refreshing taste make it an excellent accompaniment to various main courses. If you haven't tried it, we encourage you to give it a go. This recipe delivers a combination of sweet, tangy, sharp, and slightly nutty flavors that won't disappoint.
