Time 10m

Yield 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 cups milk
2 cups half-and-half
1 cup good semisweet chocolate chips
Splash vanilla extract
1 teaspoon sugar, optional
Whipped cream, to serve

Steps:

  • To make the basic hot chocolate, combine the milk with the half-and-half in a small saucepan. Warm over medium-low heat, and then stir in the chocolate chips. Stir until melted (though there will still be lovely particles of chocolate throughout). If it's too chocolaty for you, splash in a little more milk. Add a splash of vanilla extract. If it's not quite sweet enough for you, add 1 teaspoon or so of sugar. Serve in mugs with whipped cream.

Categories     Milk/Cream     Hot Drink     Non-Alcoholic     Chocolate     Christmas     Kid-Friendly     Quick & Easy     Winter     Christmas Eve     Boil     Parade     Drink     Small Plates

Yield Makes 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 2

12 ounces semisweet chocolate (chips or chopped bars are both fine)
2 quarts milk (8 cups)

Steps:

  • 1. Combine the chocolate and milk in a heavy saucepan. Place over medium heat until bubbles form, reduce the heat slightly, and simmer until the chocolate melts, whisking constantly.
  • 2. Before serving, raise the heat until the chocolate just boils, still whisking. Enjoy.

Tips for Making Luscious Hot Chocolate:

  • Use high-quality chocolate: The quality of the chocolate you use will greatly impact the flavor of your hot chocolate. Look for chocolate with a cocoa content of at least 70%.
  • Don't overheat the milk: Overheating the milk can cause the chocolate to seize and become grainy. Heat the milk gently over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it just begins to simmer.
  • Add flavorings gradually: If you're adding flavorings such as vanilla extract or cinnamon, start with a small amount and add more to taste. You can always add more flavor, but it's difficult to take it away.
  • Top with whipped cream and marshmallows: Whipped cream and marshmallows are classic toppings for hot chocolate. They add a touch of sweetness and creaminess that makes the drink even more decadent.

Conclusion:

Hot chocolate is a delicious and comforting drink that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With a few simple tips, you can make luscious hot chocolate that will warm you up on a cold day or satisfy your sweet tooth. So next time you're craving something sweet and chocolatey, give one of these recipes a try. You won't be disappointed!
