MAID-RITE'S

Maid-Rite's image

Traditional Maid-Rites from Marshalltown Iowa were served with only yellow mustard, pickle and onion. Ketchup was taken off the counters because the 'hobos' would take the ketchup to make tomato soup back when the restaurant first started. (A history lesson, who knew.) Here's the copycat version of maid-rites.

Time 1h20m

Yield 10-12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

3 lbs ground beef, fried and fat drained off
1 (10 1/2 ounce) can French onion soup
1.5 (1 1/4 ounce) envelopes Lipton Onion Soup Mix
hamburger bun

Steps:

  • After frying hamburger and draining it, mix in all the soup mixes and simmer to blend flavors, about an hour would do.
  • Ladle on top of hamburger buns and treat them like you would a sloppy joe.
  • Any left over meat is great for taco and burrito filler.

Tips:

  • Mise en Place: Before you start cooking, ensure all your ingredients are prepped and measured. This will make cooking a breeze.
  • Shred Your Beef: For the best texture, shred the beef against the grain. Use two forks to pull the beef apart into thin, tender pieces.
  • Season to Taste: Don't be afraid to adjust the seasonings to your preference. Taste the sauce as it cooks and add more garlic powder, salt, or pepper as desired.
  • Cook on Low and Slow: The secret to tender, fall-apart beef is low and slow cooking. Cook the beef on low for at least 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours, stirring occasionally.
  • Use a Crock-Pot Liner: To make cleanup easier, use a crock-pot liner. This way, you can easily lift the cooked beef and sauce out of the pot without any scrubbing.
  • Serve with Your Favorite Toppings: Maid-Rite sandwiches are traditionally served on white bread buns with dill pickles, yellow mustard, and onions. You can also add ketchup, lettuce, or tomato to your sandwich.
