MEATLOAF SHEPHERD'S PIE RECIPE - (4.5/5)

Meatloaf Shepherd's Pie Recipe - (4.5/5) image

Provided by carvalhohm

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 eggs, beaten
1 c. milk
1-3/4 c. soft bread crumbs
1/4 c. onion, chopped
1 t. salt
1/2 t. dried sage
1/4 t. pepper
1-1/2 lbs. ground beef
2 4-oz. pkgs. butter & herb instant mashed potato flakes
1 t. mustard
1/2 c. shredded Cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, mix together eggs, milk, bread crumbs, onion and seasonings. Add beef and mix well. Press into the bottom and up the sides of an ungreased deep-dish 9" pie plate. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare potato flakes according to package directions; stir in mustard. Drain meatloaf; spread potatoes over top. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake an additional 3 to 5 minutes, until cheese melts. Let stand for 5 minutes before cutting. Serves 6.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of meat. Ground beef is the traditional choice for both meatloaf and shepherd's pie, but you can also use ground lamb, pork, or turkey. If you're using a leaner meat, like turkey, add some extra fat, such as bacon or butter, to keep the dish moist.
  • Don't overmix the meat. Overmixing can make the meatloaf or shepherd's pie tough. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Season the meat well. Use a variety of herbs and spices to flavor the meat. Some good options include garlic, onion, salt, pepper, paprika, and chili powder.
  • Use a flavorful sauce. The sauce is what really brings a meatloaf or shepherd's pie together. Use a sauce that is rich and flavorful, such as a tomato sauce, a cheese sauce, or a mushroom sauce.
  • Cook the meatloaf or shepherd's pie until it is cooked through. Meatloaf should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit, and shepherd's pie should be cooked until the meat is cooked through and the potatoes are tender.

Conclusion:

Meatloaf and shepherd's pie are two classic comfort foods that are easy to make and loved by people of all ages. With a little planning and effort, you can make a delicious meatloaf or shepherd's pie that will be the star of your next meal.
