This is a family favorite. I'm not a huge steak eater, but loved the flavor of stroganoff. Using hamburger made it more palatable for me and it was an easy dish for our children to eat as toddlers. -Terri Wetzel, Roseburg, Oregon

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 lb ground beef - extra lean works great
1/4 c onion - diced - more if you like
2 Tbsp flour
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp dried crushed basil
1/8 tsp garlic powder
1/8 tsp black pepper
1 can(s) condensed beef broth (10.5 oz)
1 can(s) tomato paste (6 oz)
1 can(s) sliced mushrooms (3 oz) drained
1 c sour cream
hot buttered wide noodles

Steps:

  • 1. Set noodles to cook while you prepare sauce. I usually prepare an entire package, but prepare what you think you will need.
  • 2. In large skillet, cook meat and onion until meat is lightly browned. Drain if needed.
  • 3. Combine flour, sugar, salt, basil, garlic powder and pepper. Sprinkle over meat. Stir in broth and tomato paste. Simmer uncovered 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • 4. Stir in mushrooms and sour cream. Heat through but do not boil.
  • 5. Serve as sauce over noodles.

Tips:

  • Choose the right noodles: Wide, flat noodles like fettuccine or pappardelle are ideal for mock stroganoff, as they can hold the creamy sauce well.
  • Use a variety of mushrooms: Different types of mushrooms, such as cremini, shiitake, and oyster, add different flavors and textures to the dish.
  • Cook the mushrooms correctly: Sauté the mushrooms until they are browned and slightly crispy. This will help to bring out their flavor.
  • Make a flavorful sauce: The sauce is the key to a delicious mock stroganoff. Use a combination of broth, sour cream, and Dijon mustard to create a rich and creamy sauce.
  • Add some vegetables: Vegetables like onions, garlic, and carrots can add color and flavor to the dish.
  • Serve immediately: Mock stroganoff is best served immediately, while the noodles are still hot and the sauce is creamy.

Conclusion:

Mock stroganoff is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal. With its creamy sauce, tender mushrooms, and flavorful noodles, it is sure to be a hit with the whole family. So next time you are looking for a quick and satisfying meal, give mock stroganoff a try.
