Steps:
- Prepare cake mix according to package. Bake in 2 greased 6-inch round cake pans. Let cool. Fill and frost with but.tercream
- Beat softened butter on medium speed with an electric or stand mixer. Beat for 3 minutes until smooth and creamy.
- Add powdered sugar, cream, and vanilla extract with the mixer running on low. Increase to high speed and beat for 3 minutes. Note: If the frosting is too thick, you can add a little more cream. Just add one tablespoon at a time, then mix thoroughly until you get the consistency you like.
- *Note: If you don't have heavy cream, you can use milk or water instead. If using milk or water, I would try 3 tablespoons instead of 1/4 cup. If it's too thick, add another tablespoon.
- For the decoration, place M&M's on side of cake in a diagonal line in each color. Start with red, then white, then blue. Repeat until you have gone all around the cake. Pipe swirls of frosting on top using a 1M pastry tip. Add more M&M's to top of cake and paper flags, if desired.

MOM MOMS BUTTERSCOTCH ICING
My Grandmother(Mom Mom) made this icing and put it on everything from chocolate cake to cookies. I love it and can eat it just by the spoonful, be careful when making it as it can easliy become too stiff. I really don't mind if it does because then I would just put it in a pan and cut it like fudge.

Tips:
- Use unsalted butter for the best flavor and texture.
- Make sure the butter is at room temperature before creaming it with the sugar. This will help to ensure a smooth and creamy frosting.
- If you don't have a mixer, you can cream the butter and sugar together by hand using a wooden spoon or spatula. Just be sure to mix until the mixture is light and fluffy.
- Add the milk or cream one tablespoon at a time until the frosting reaches the desired consistency. If you add too much liquid, the frosting will be too thin and runny.
- Flavor the frosting to your liking. Some popular flavorings include vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and lemon.
- If you are using the frosting to decorate a cake or cupcakes, chill it for at least 30 minutes before using. This will help it to hold its shape.
Conclusion:
Buttercream frosting is a classic and versatile frosting that can be used to decorate a variety of cakes, cupcakes, and other desserts. It is easy to make and can be flavored to your liking. With a little practice, you can create beautiful and delicious buttercream frosting that will impress your friends and family.
