Got this from a co-worker over 10 years ago, and haven't quit making it since! A little bit sweet, but a touch of zip form the chili powder and vinegar. It's easy to expand the recipe to serve a crowd, too.

1 lb browned fresh ground beef
1/2 cup minced medium red bell pepper
1/3 cup minced green bell pepper
1 (6 ounce) can quality tomato paste
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup light corn syrup (Karo)
1/2 cup distilled white vinegar (Heinz)
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon minced onion flakes
1 teaspoon unseasoned sweet chili powder
1 teaspoon plain salt
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (Lea & Perrins)
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
1/8 teaspoon red chili pepper flakes
1/8 teaspoon white pepper
1 bay leaf

Steps:

  • BROWN the GROUND BEEF in a skillet over medium heat, breaking meat up with spatula as it cooks, while stirring occasionally.

  • DRAIN the GROUND BEEF if necessary after it has browned.
  • COVER the skillet with ground beef; REDUCE heat to lowest setting to keep warmed.

Spoon sauce over warmed hamburger buns (you may customize your Sloppy Joes to your own preference, such as adding powdered parmesan cheese and/or shredded cheddar cheese, or other extras).

Tips:

  • Choose the right ground beef: Opt for lean ground beef (80% lean/20% fat) for a healthier option that still delivers great flavor.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: Cooking the beef in batches prevents it from steaming and ensures even browning.
  • Sauté the onions and peppers: This step adds a depth of flavor to the sauce.
  • Use a variety of spices: Experiment with different spices, such as chili powder, oregano, and cumin, to create a unique flavor profile.
  • Simmer the sauce: Allow the sauce to simmer for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  • Serve on your favorite bread: Sloppy Joes are traditionally served on hamburger buns, but you can also use hot dog buns, slider buns, or even bread bowls.

With its irresistible combination of sweet, tangy, and savory flavors, MS Sloppy Joe Sauce is a classic comfort food that's perfect for casual gatherings, potlucks, and weeknight dinners.
