Number Of Ingredients 10

1 egg
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup sour milk (you can sour sweet milk by adding 1 tsp. vinegar)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup boiling water

Steps:

  • Put all ingredients in a bowl (don't mix till last item has been added).
  • Pour into greased cake pan (can be made layer or sheet cake).
  • Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes.
  • When cooled spread with your favorite frosting.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients: This will make a big difference in the taste of your cake. Look for good-quality cocoa powder, butter, and flour.
  • Measure your ingredients accurately: This is essential for a successful cake. Use a kitchen scale to measure your ingredients, if possible.
  • Preheat your oven before you start baking: This will help the cake rise evenly.
  • Don't overmix the batter: Overmixing can make the cake tough. Mix the batter just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Bake the cake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean: This is the best way to tell if the cake is done.
  • Let the cake cool completely before frosting it: This will help the frosting set properly.
