OLD FASHIONED APPLESAUCE SPICE CAKE

I found this recipe on a Duncan Hines spice cake mix box. It was easy to make. It was not too sweet, but sweet enough! I used chunky applesauce & I did not frost the cake -- I just sprinkled it with cinnamon sugar, but the frosting sounds good too.

I like it how it doesn't "cheat" by using a packaged cake mix. This recipe is from "Simply Delicious"- A cookbook comprised of Herberger's Employee Family Recipes.

OLD FASHIONED HOMEMADE APPLESAUCE CAKE.

Old Fashioned Homemade Applesauce Cake. image

If you make your own homemade applesauce than this is the cake recipe for you. Using store-bought just will not work ( I tried, very dry and hard result). But with the homemade this is a very moist, delicous and versatile cake, I have served it plain sans icing, iced it with my grandmothers butterscotch icing or vanilla or cream cheese icings, all with rave reviews. So if you've got a couple cups of left over applesauce give it a try!

Tips for Making Old Fashioned Applesauce Cake:

- Use fresh apples for the applesauce. This will give the cake the best flavor. - Peel and core the apples before cooking them. This will make the applesauce smoother. - Cook the applesauce until it is thick and bubbly. This will help to prevent the cake from being too wet. - Let the applesauce cool completely before adding it to the cake batter. This will help to prevent the cake from curdling. - Cream the butter and sugar together until they are light and fluffy. This will help to incorporate air into the cake, making it lighter and more tender. - Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. This will help to prevent the cake from curdling. - Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients gradually, mixing until just combined. Overmixing will toughen the cake. - Bake the cake in a preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. - Let the cake cool completely before frosting. This will help to prevent the frosting from melting.

Conclusion:

Old fashioned applesauce cake is a delicious and easy-to-make cake that is perfect for any occasion. With its moist texture, sweet and tangy flavor, and simple ingredients, this cake is sure to be a hit with everyone who tries it. Serve it with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra special treat.
