DEPRESSION ERA APPLE CANDY PIE

Depression Era Apple Candy Pie image

This is a recipe handed down thru the generations. Because it's an old recipe, ingredients are not exact... Grandma worked with a pinch of this and a bit of that...Serving sizes are approximate.

Provided by Connie C.

Categories     Pie

Time 1h5m

Yield 10 1 casserole, 10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

5 cups sliced apples (enough to fill a casserole pan about 3/4 full.)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 cup flour
1 cup either unbleached cane sugar or 1 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
4 tablespoons soft butter
3/4 cup of chopped hickory nuts or 3/4 cup chopped pecans

Steps:

  • Fill a medium sized casserole three - quarters full of peeled, cored, and sliced apples.
  • Add the lemon juice.
  • In a separate bowl, mix the flour, sugar, cinnamon, butter, and nuts.
  • Blend until mixture looks crumbly.
  • Sprinkle on top of the apples. Do not stir.
  • Bake in a 350 degree oven about forty- five minutes.
  • Turn oven to 450 degrees and allow it to brown quickly.
  • It can be served hot or cold.
  • If you like, you may pour cream on top.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of apples. This will give your pie a more complex flavor and texture. Some good choices include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn.
  • Peel and core the apples thinly. This will help them cook evenly.
  • Add a little bit of lemon juice to the apples. This will help prevent them from browning.
  • Use a combination of spices in your pie filling. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice are all classic choices.
  • Don't overfill your pie crust. This will make it difficult to seal the pie and will result in a messy pie.
  • Bake the pie at a high temperature for the first 15 minutes. This will help to create a crispy crust.
  • Reduce the oven temperature and continue baking the pie until the filling is bubbling and the crust is golden brown.
  • Let the pie cool for at least 30 minutes before serving. This will allow the filling to set and the flavors to develop.

Conclusion:

Cinnamon candy apple pie is a delicious and classic dessert that is perfect for any occasion. By following these tips, you can make a pie that is sure to impress your family and friends. So next time you are looking for a sweet treat, give this recipe a try. You won't be disappointed!
