Yield 12 large muffins

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 (11 ounce) can mandarin oranges (a 15-oz can works as well)
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup shortening
1 egg, slightly beaten
1/3 cup milk
1/4 cup melted butter
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F Place muffin papers in muffin tins or spray tins with vegetable oil.
  • Drain oranges and pat dry with paper towels. Set aside.
  • Whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, nutmeg, allspice, and sugar. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender or fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  • While muffins are baking, place melted butter in a small bowl. In another small bowl, whisk together sugar and cinnamon.

ORANGE SUGAR GLAZE

Orange Sugar Glaze image

I discovered this powdered sugar glaze when I ran out of milk one day and needed to whip up a glaze for my bundt cake. It goes great with chocolate bundt cakes or orange bundt cakes even just as a great glaze on sugar cookies if you're looking for that little something different. It also went great with Evie*'s recipe Recipe #11712 here on Zaar. Thanks for a perfect compliment to my icing Evie*!

Tips:

  • For a sweeter glaze, increase the amount of sugar in the recipe. Conversely, reduce the sugar for a less sweet glaze.
  • Different types of oranges can be used to make the glaze, such as navel oranges, Valencia oranges, or blood oranges. Each type of orange will impart a slightly different flavor to the glaze.
  • The glaze can be used on a variety of foods, including chicken, fish, pork, and vegetables. It can also be used as a glaze for cakes, cookies, and other desserts.
  • If you don't have fresh oranges on hand, you can use orange juice concentrate or frozen orange juice. However, fresh oranges will yield the best flavor.
  • The glaze can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. When you're ready to use it, simply reheat it over low heat until it's melted and smooth.

Conclusion:

Orange sugar glaze is a delicious and versatile glaze that can be used on a variety of foods. It's easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. Whether you're looking for a sweet and tangy glaze for your chicken or a simple glaze for your vegetables, orange sugar glaze is a great option.
