Tips:

  • Choose the right rice: Different types of rice have different cooking times and textures. For orzo pilaf, use a medium-grain rice like Arborio or Carnaroli, which will absorb the broth and become tender without getting mushy.
  • Toast the rice: Toasting the rice before cooking it helps to bring out its nutty flavor and prevent it from sticking together.
  • Use a flavorful broth: The broth is the key to a flavorful orzo pilaf. Use a good-quality broth, such as chicken, vegetable, or beef broth. You can also use a combination of broths.
  • Add vegetables and herbs: Vegetables and herbs add flavor and texture to orzo pilaf. Common additions include onions, garlic, celery, carrots, and parsley.
  • Cook the rice until it is tender: Orzo pilaf is done cooking when the rice is tender and has absorbed all of the broth. This usually takes about 18-20 minutes.
  • Let the pilaf rest: After cooking, let the pilaf rest for a few minutes before serving. This allows the rice to absorb any remaining liquid and fluff up.
