CARAMEL PRETZEL PUPPY CHOW

Caramel Pretzel Puppy Chow image

Yield 8-10

Number Of Ingredients 9

5 cups of Pretzel Snaps (the square pretzels)
6 tablespoons Butter
1 cup Dark Brown Sugar
1/2 cup, plus 1 tablespoon Cream
1 teaspoon Vanilla
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1 cup Mini Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips
1/2 cup Nutella
about 1 cup Powdered Sugar

Steps:

  • Start by making the caramel. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat and whisk in the brown sugar. Once the sugar melts, add the cream and vanilla. Whisk together and bring the caramel to a bubble. Let it bubble steadily and thicken for 10 minutes while stirring frequently. Then remove from the heat.
  • Lay out some parchment paper on your counter. Then one by one dunk the pretzels in the caramel. Let sit and dry for 15 minutes.
  • Next melt the chocolate. First combine 1 tablespoon cream and the chocolate chips in a pot over medium low heat. Once melted, add the nutella and stir until just melted. Then add all of the pretzels and stir to coat them in chocolate.
  • Pour the chocolate covered pretzels in a thin layer over the parchment and let them dry for 5 minutes. Use a spatula to break up any pretzels that are stuck together.
  • Place the chocolate covered pretzels in a large ziploc bag and pour the powdered sugar in. Shake to evenly coat the pretzels with the sugar.
  • Pour into a bowl to serve or package up to give as a gift.

PRETZEL DOGS

Pretzel Dogs image

So good and better than the ones you get at the mall that cost $5 and were made four hours ago! These are a family favorite that even my pickiest eater goes back for seconds (and sometimes thirds!) We always make a big batch because these are just as good reheated the next day for 45 seconds in the microwave with some mustard! Yum!

Time 2h15m

Yield 20

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast
2 ½ teaspoons white sugar
2 cups warm water
2 cups warm milk
½ cup vegetable oil
1 ½ teaspoons salt
10 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 (16 ounce) packages hot dogs
¼ cup coarse kosher salt, or to taste

Steps:

  • Sprinkle the yeast and sugar over 2 cups of warm water in a small bowl. The water should be no more than 100 degrees F (40 degrees C). Let stand for 20 minutes until the yeast softens and begins to form a creamy foam.
  • Combine the yeast mixture with the warm milk, oil, and salt in a large mixing bowl; stir well to combine. Stir in half of the flour mixture until no dry spots remain. Stir in the remaining flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. The dough should be moderately stiff and slightly sticky. When the dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes.
  • Spray a large bowl with cooking spray, then place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat. Cover with plastic wrap or a light cloth and let rise in a warm place (80 to 95 degrees F (27 to 35 degrees C)) until doubled in volume, about 45 minutes.
  • After the dough has risen, fill a large pot with about 8 cups water, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, and the baking soda and bring to a rolling boil over high heat. While the water is coming to a boil cut the the dough into 20 pieces, about the size of a golf ball. Roll each piece into a 12 inch long rope about 1 1/2 inches thick.
  • Preheat an oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease 2 baking sheets.
  • Dip a strip of dough into the boiling water using a pair of tongs, count to 5, remove it from the water, and place it on a paper towel for a few seconds. Wrap the strip around a hot dog, place on a baking sheet, and sprinkle with coarse salt. Repeat with the remaining strips of dough and hot dogs.
  • Bake in a preheated oven until they are golden brown, about 15 to 20 minutes.

PUPPY CHOW

Puppy Chow image

This delightfully messy Midwestern treat is simple enough for kids to make: Just toss crispy cereal with melted peanut butter and chocolate, then dust with lots of confectioners' sugar. The recipe's origins are murky, but puppy chow, or muddy buddies, can probably be traced back to recipe pamphlets and community cookbooks from the 1960s. Unlike the version on the back of the Chex cereal box, this recipe calls for a whole box of cereal and for cooling the chocolate-coated cereal a bit, which encourages clusters to form and helps the sugar stick. The cooled cereal is then tossed with confectioners' sugar on a baking sheet for even coverage. There are many additions to consider: popcorn, chocolate chips, pretzels, nuts, mini marshmallows - the list goes on.

Time 20m

Yield 12 cups

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 (12-ounce) box of Chex, Crispix or similar cereal (about 11 cups)
1 1/2 cups bittersweet chocolate chips or 10 ounces/283 grams chopped bittersweet chocolate
3/4 cup creamy peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
1 1/2 cups/185 grams confectioners' sugar
Kosher salt

Steps:

  • Place the cereal in a large bowl. Melt the chocolate and peanut butter in the microwave or on the stovetop. Microwave in a bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until nearly completely melted, then stir to melt completely. On the stovetop, stir in a small saucepan over low heat. Off the heat, stir in the vanilla.
  • Pour the chocolate-peanut butter mixture over the cereal and stir vigorously to coat. Refrigerate until the chocolate is cool, tacky and less shiny than melted chocolate, 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Spread the cereal in an even layer on a sheet pan. With a spoon or fine-mesh sieve, sprinkle some of the powdered sugar evenly over the cereal, add a pinch of salt, then toss with a spoon or your hands, or both, until evenly coated. Repeat with the remaining powdered sugar (adding the sugar in batches ensures it doesn't all soak into the chocolate). Set aside to set, at least 5 minutes. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3 to 4 days, or in the fridge or freezer for months.

Tips:

  • Use fresh ingredients for the best flavor.
  • Be sure to melt the chocolate chips and butter until smooth.
  • Add the Chex cereal and pretzels to the chocolate mixture and stir until evenly coated.
  • Pour the mixture onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and spread it out evenly.
  • Refrigerate the mixture for at least 30 minutes, or until the chocolate is set.
  • Break the mixture into small pieces and serve.

Conclusion:

Pretzel Puppy Chow is a delicious and easy-to-make snack that is perfect for parties and gatherings. It is also a great way to use up leftover pretzels. With its sweet and salty flavor, Pretzel Puppy Chow is sure to be a hit with everyone who tries it.
