This is a fabulous old-fashioned recipe given to me by a friend. It was her mother's recipe and it is the best shortcake. It sops up all the juice and the touch of nutmeg sends it over the top. My very favorite recipe for strawberry shortcake!

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
4 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg, or to taste
½ cup butter
1 egg
⅓ cup milk

Steps:

  • Preheat an oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Grease an 8-inch baking pan.
  • Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg in a large bowl. Cut in butter with a knife or pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Beat egg and milk in another bowl; stir into flour mixture until batter is just blended. Spread batter in the prepared baking pan.
  • Bake in preheated oven until golden, about 15 minutes. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes before removing to cool completely on a wire rack.

1-1/2 cups sliced fresh strawberries
1/3 cup sugar
BISCUITS:
1 cup all-purpose flour
7 teaspoons sugar, divided
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup shortening
1/3 cup buttermilk
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, mash the strawberries; stir in sugar. Cover and refrigerate until serving. , For biscuits, in a large bowl, combine the flour, 4-1/2 teaspoons sugar, baking powder, salt, cream of tarter and baking soda. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in buttermilk and vanilla until moistened. , Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface; knead 8-10 times. Shape into two 4-in. circles. Place on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 450° for 12-14 minutes or until golden brown. , To assemble, split shortcakes in half. Place cake bottoms on dessert plates. 1 1/2 cups heavy cream, chilled
3 tablespoons sugar

Steps:

  • Mix strawberries with 3 tablespoons sugar and refrigerate while juices develop, at least 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

1 and 2/3 cups (210 g) all-purpose flour (if you don't have kitchen scale fill the cup with spoon when measure and DO NOT overdo it with flour!!!)
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter- melted
1 cup sugar
2 egg whites
3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
12 medium strawberries- hulled
1 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
3-4 tablespoon powdered sugar (or more to taste)
1/2 cup strawberries chopped into really small pieces (or it will stuck into the piping tip)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350F, line standard cupcake pan with 12 liners and set aside.
  • In a bowl combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; set aside.
  • Melt the butter in a small sauce pan over low heat and set aside to cool.
  • Transfer melted butter to a large bowl and whisk in sugar (it will be grainy), then whisk in egg whites, milk, yogurt and vanilla. Whisk by hand or use electric mixer on a low speed.
  • Slowly add dry ingredients into egg mixture and mix on low speed until combined (the batter should be thick). Divide the batter into 12 cupcake liner (it will be about 3/4 full) and bake 20 minutes (until the toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean). Let them cool in the pan for 10 minutes then transfer to a rack to cool completely.
  • With a sharp knife hollow out the center of the cupcake and insert the strawberry inside.
  • To make the frosting in a large bowl beat heavy cream until soft peaks form, then add powdered sugar and vanilla and continue mixing on high speed until stiff peaks form. Stir in strawberries chopped into really fine pieces.Pipe the frosting onto cooled cupcakes.
  • Store in the fridge. Garnish with strawberries before serving.
