PEAR OR QUINCE SAMBAL

Pear or Quince Sambal image

Underripe pears or Grannny Smith apples are best -- they have drier flesh, like a quince. In fact, this is my default recipe for underripe fruit (especially homegorwn). Great with roast or grilled meats, especially fatty ones like pork or goose. From a cookbook called Salsas, Sambals, Chutneys and Chow Chows.

CRUNCHY PEAR SALSA

Yield Makes about 3 cups

Number Of Ingredients 7

3 8-ounce firm but ripe Bosc pears, peeled, cored, finely chopped
1/2 cup finely chopped white onion
1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
1/4 cup chopped fresh mint
1/4 cup fresh lime juice
1 large serrano or jalapeño chili with seeds, minced
1 teaspoon sugar

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in medium bowl. Season with salt and pepper. (Can be made 3 hours ahead. Cover; chill.)
  • Market Tip:
  • Mexican limes, sold at Latin American markets and some supermarkets, are especially good in this recipe because they are sweeter and more fragrant than Persian limes (the more familiar variety). Mexican limes are also referred to as Key limes, which are available at Melissa's (melissas.com; 800-588-0151).

Tips:

  • Choose ripe quince and pears: Firm but ripe quince and pears will give the salsa the best flavor and texture.
  • Use a variety of colors: To make the salsa more visually appealing, use a variety of quince and pear colors, such as yellow, red, and green.
  • Add some heat: If you like spicy salsa, add a jalapeño or serrano pepper. Remove the seeds and ribs of the pepper before adding it to the salsa, to control the heat level.
  • Use fresh herbs: Fresh herbs, such as cilantro, parsley, or mint, will brighten up the flavors of the salsa.
  • Let the salsa rest: After making the salsa, let it sit for at least 30 minutes before serving. This will allow the flavors to meld together.

Conclusion:

Quince pear salsa is a delicious and versatile condiment that can be used to add flavor to a variety of dishes. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. Whether you like it mild or spicy, sweet or savory, there is a quince pear salsa recipe out there for you. So next time you are looking for a new salsa to try, give quince pear salsa a try.
