CLASSIC RANCH DRESSING

Classic Ranch Dressing image

The original dressing served in the 1950s at Hidden Valley Ranch, a guest ranch near Santa Barbara, Calif., was made mostly from dry herbs and aromatics. To recreate that taste, this recipe is made with garlic powder instead of garlic, dried parsley instead of fresh, and so on. It makes enough seasoning mix for about 4 cups dressing; you can mix it, store it, then add dairy as needed. If you don't like the zip of mustard, try hot sauce or Worcestershire sauce instead - or simply omit for a milder taste. To make a thick dip instead of a pourable dressing, reduce the amount of buttermilk to 1/4 cup.

### 3 Ways to Thicken Ranch Dressing Ranch Dressing is a versatile and delicious American Salad Dressing. It can also be used as a dipping or spreading agent for a wide variety of popular finger food. Ranch Dressing has numerous commercial variants that are available in the market, but homemade Ranch Dressing is extremely simple to make and can be easily customized to suit your dietary needs. ### Thickening Agents There are three common ways to thicken ranch dressings. 1. **Sour cream.** Sour cream is a common thickening agent for ranch dressings. It has a high fat content that helps to thicken the yogurt and buttermilk in the dressings. Sour cream also has a tangy, slightly acidic taste that can balance the sweetness of the other ingredients. 2. **Mayonnaise.** Mayonnaise is also a common thickening agent for ranch dressings, but it is not as thick as Sour cream. Mayonnaise is made with oil, eggs, and vinegar, which gives it a creamy, slightly tangy taste. Ranch dressings thickened with mayonnaise are typically not as thick as those thickened with mayonnaise, but they are still thicker than those made without a thickening agent. 3. **Cornstarch:** You can also thicken ranch dressings without altering the taste very much by using cornstarch. Start with a small amount, such as ¼ cup, and whisk it in until the mixture has the desired constancy. ### How to Use a Thickening Aget 1. **Add it to the other ingredients:** To thicken your ranch dressings, simply add one of these agents to it and whisk until it is well combined. You may need to adjust the amount of thickening agent that you use, depending on how thick you want your Ranch Dressing to be. 2. **Chill the Dressing:** Chilling the Dressing will help to thicken it, so be sure to put it in the refrigerator for at least an hour before serving. 3. **Use a Blender or Food Processor:** You can also use a blender or food process to thicken your Ranch Dressing. Simply add all of the ingredients to the blender and process until smooth. ### Other variables that may affect the resulting viscosity of a Ranch Dressing 1. **The amount of liquid ingredients used:** If you use more liquid ingredients, such as buttermilk or milk, your Ranch Dressing will be thinner. If you use more solid ingredients, such as mayonnaise or Greek yogurt, it will be thicker. 2. **The type of yogurt or buttermilk used:** Whole milk yogurt or buttermilk will produce a thicker Ranch Dressing than low- or non- fat yogurt or buttermilk. 3. **The amount of time the Dressing is chilled:** The longer you chill the Dressing, the thicker it will become. ### How to Use Ranch Dressing Ranch Dressing can be used in a variety of ways, including: * Salads: Ranch Dressing is a classic Salad Dressing. It is especially good on green salads, but it can also be used on salads made with other Vegetables, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots. * Dipping sauces: Ranch Dressing is a great dipping sauces for many different types of food. It is especially good with french fries, chicken nuggets, and pizza. * Spreads: Ranch Dressing may be used as a spread on sandwiches and wraps. It is also a good spread for grilled chicken or fish. ### Storing Ranch Dressing Ranch Dressing can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Be sure to store it in an airtight container. Frozen Ranch Dressing can be stored in the freezer for up to six months.
