DEAN'S FAMILY REUNION BAKED BEANS
Dean is the name that I was called as a kid growing up by the older generation of adults. Many of whom never realized that my actual name was Rose Mary. So when I added this recipe to my cookbook I named the recipe Dean's Family Reunion Baked Beans, so that they would know that this is the original recipe that I had been making...

Cover top of beans randomly with precooked bacon slices. Bake in preheated 325 degree F. oven for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until some of the liquid has baked off, and beans appear to have thickened.

Steps:
- 1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees and line a 1/2 deep baking sheet with foil. Lay the bacon on this and bake about 12 minutes or until cooked. Remove and drain on paper toweling and snip into pieces with kitchen sheers.
- 2. While the bacon is cooking, empty the beans with their juice into a 9x13 baking dish.
- 3. Chop the onion. Add to beans along with the sugar and garlic powder, folding gently into the beans.
- 4. Adjust the oven heat down to 325 degrees. Add the bacon, gently folding into the beans.
- 5. Bake, uncovered in a 325 degree oven for 2 1/2 hours. The bean juicy will thicken. These beans are on the sweet side....you may adjust the amount of sugar down but we love them this way with potato salad and chicken or pork!
Tips:
- Soak the beans overnight: This will help to reduce the cooking time and make the beans more digestible. If you don't have time to soak the beans overnight, you can quick-soak them by boiling them for 1 minute, then removing them from the heat and letting them sit for 1 hour.
- Use a variety of beans: This will give your reunion beans a more complex flavor and texture. Some good bean combinations include black beans, pinto beans, kidney beans, and navy beans.
- Add aromatics to the pot: Aromatics, such as onions, garlic, and celery, will help to flavor the beans. You can also add other vegetables, such as carrots, potatoes, or tomatoes.
- Use a flavorful broth: The broth that you use to cook the beans will also add flavor to the dish. You can use chicken broth, beef broth, or vegetable broth. If you're using a canned broth, be sure to dilute it with water so that it's not too salty.
- Season the beans to taste: Once the beans are cooked, season them with salt, pepper, and other spices to taste. You can also add a splash of vinegar or lemon juice to brighten the flavor.
Conclusion:
Reunion beans are a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. They're perfect for potlucks, picnics, and other gatherings. With a little planning and preparation, you can easily make a pot of reunion beans that everyone will love.
