FRIED CABBAGE

When I was young, my family grew our own cabbages. It was fun to put them to use in the kitchen, just as I did with this comforting side. With potatoes, deviled eggs and cornbread, fried cabbage tastes like home. -Bernice Morris, Marshfield, Missouri

Time 35m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 head cabbage, cut in quarters
1 yellow onion, diced
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 bouillon cube

Steps:

  • Cut cabbage into quarters and soak in tap water with a pinch of sugar.
  • and let set for 10 minute Then drain in a colinder and set aside.
  • In a deep skillet brown diced onions, when lightly browned add the cabbage to the onions using a wooden spoon to seperate the leaves of the cabbage . Reduce fire to a simmer gentle folding the cabbage into the onions, allowing the cabbage to turn a golden brown. When golden brown add the water and bullion cube, salt, pepper, and a pinch of sugar fold in till well dispersed cover with tight lid, reduce the fire to low and allow to simmer for 15 minutes .
  • My family like to have cornbread with this dish. If you like your cornbread a little spicy add some chopped jelapeno sparingly to the cornbread batter. Just the right touch to this easy to prepare meal.

Tips:

  • Choose the right cabbage: For the best flavor and texture, select a firm, heavy head of green cabbage with tightly packed leaves.
  • Slice the cabbage thinly: Thinly slicing the cabbage will help it cook evenly and quickly.
  • Use a large skillet: A large skillet will allow the cabbage to spread out and cook evenly.
  • Don't overcrowd the skillet: Overcrowding the skillet will prevent the cabbage from cooking evenly.
  • Cook the cabbage over medium heat: Medium heat will help the cabbage cook through without burning.
  • Stir the cabbage frequently: Stirring the cabbage frequently will help it cook evenly and prevent it from sticking to the skillet.
  • Season the cabbage to taste: Season the cabbage with salt, pepper, and other spices to taste.
  • Serve the cabbage immediately: Fried cabbage is best served immediately after it is cooked.

Conclusion:

Fried cabbage is a delicious and easy-to-make side dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It is a great way to use up leftover cabbage, and it can also be made ahead of time and reheated. Whether you are looking for a quick and easy weeknight meal or a hearty and flavorful side dish for your next holiday gathering, fried cabbage is a great option.
