I love, love, love this recipe. It can be a little time consuming to make but you can prepare it in advance and then bake when ready. It is the creamy goodness of comfort food but gourmet enough to serve to guests. This comes from a favorite cookbook of mine, "Gourmet's Parties".

Tips:
- Choose the right sweet potatoes and butternut squash: Select firm, unblemished sweet potatoes and butternut squash with smooth skin. Avoid any that have soft spots or bruises.
- Wash and peel the vegetables: Thoroughly wash the sweet potatoes and butternut squash under running water. Then, use a vegetable peeler to remove the skin.
- Slice the vegetables evenly: Cut the sweet potatoes and butternut squash into even-sized slices. This will help them cook evenly.
- Use a sharp knife: A sharp knife will make it easier to slice the vegetables and prevent them from tearing.
- Don't overcrowd the baking dish: Make sure there is enough space between the vegetable slices in the baking dish so that they can cook evenly.
- Bake the vegetables until tender: Bake the vegetables in a preheated oven until they are tender when pierced with a fork.
- Season to taste: Once the vegetables are cooked, season them to taste with salt, pepper, and any other desired seasonings.
