AMAZING HAMBURGER STEAK WITH GRAVY

Amazing Hamburger Steak With Gravy image

Can you get a really steak-like flavor in a hamburger steak? Yes! Seasoned well and carefully cooked you can indeed get that special flavor. Even better, this is an easy dish -- no harder than throwing together a fast hamburger. Note: this can be made lactose-free by substituting beef stock for the milk.

Categories     Meat

Time 40m

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 lbs lean ground beef
1 onion, chopped
2 -3 tablespoons dry steak seasoning (I used McCormick Steak Rub)
1 -2 garlic clove, crushed
1/2 cup oatmeal
1/4 cup milk
2 eggs
salt and pepper
1/4 cup white wine or 1/4 cup sherry wine, according to taste
2 cups milk
3 tablespoons cornstarch

Steps:

  • Mix the hamburger steak ingredients thoroughly. Let rest 5 minutes.
  • Form meat into 6-8, oval patties.
  • Heat a little olive oil in a large skillet on medium-high.
  • Cook hamburger steaks over medium-high heat so that they are well-browned and cooked through. There will probably be 2 or 3 batches depending on skillet size.
  • Pour off excess grease.
  • Deglaze pan with the wine -- scraping up the good, brown bits.
  • Shake milk and cornstarch together well and add to pan.
  • Turn heat down. Bring gravy to a simmer, stirring constantly.
  • Serve with rice, mashed potatoes, bread, or anything else that tastes good under gravy.
  • Note: this can be made lactose-free by substituting beef stock for the milk. If you do not have genuine stock a good soup base will give better results than bullion cubes. Or use the dripping from roasts or pot roasts, thinned down with up to 50% water.

Tips:

  • Choose the right ground beef: For the best flavor and texture, use a ground beef blend with a fat content of 80/20 or 90/10. This will ensure that your hamburger steaks are juicy and flavorful.
  • Season the beef well: Don't be afraid to season your beef liberally with salt, pepper, and other spices. This will help to enhance the flavor of the meat.
  • Form the beef into patties: When forming the beef into patties, make sure that they are all the same size and thickness. This will help them to cook evenly.
  • Sear the patties: Sear the patties in a hot skillet over medium-high heat. This will help to create a nice crust on the outside of the patties while keeping the inside juicy.
  • Reduce the heat and cook the patties through: Once the patties have been seared, reduce the heat to medium-low and cook the patties through. This will take about 5-7 minutes per side, depending on the thickness of the patties.
  • Let the patties rest: Once the patties are cooked through, let them rest for a few minutes before serving. This will help the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, resulting in a more flavorful and juicy patty.

Conclusion:

Hamburger steaks are a classic American comfort food that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. They are easy to make and can be customized to your own liking. Whether you like your hamburger steaks simple or loaded with toppings, there is a recipe out there for everyone. So next time you are looking for a quick and easy meal, give hamburger steaks a try.
