When my husband and I moved down South, we discovered our love for pimiento cheese! It adds southern flair to this meat loaf recipe. My husband loves his cheese, so he likes to add a sprinkle of shredded sharp cheddar cheese, and diced jalapeno on top for an added kick. -Patricia Getson, Wilmington, North Carolina

Tips:

  • Use fresh, high-quality ingredients: The better the ingredients, the better the sauce will be. Look for ripe tomatoes, fresh herbs, and high-quality meat.
  • Brown the meat well: Browning the meat adds flavor and depth to the sauce. Be sure to brown it in batches so that it doesn't steam.
  • Simmer the sauce for at least 30 minutes: This allows the flavors to meld and develop. The longer you simmer it, the better it will taste.
  • Add a little sweetness: A bit of sugar or honey can help to balance out the acidity of the tomatoes and add a touch of sweetness.
  • Season the sauce to taste: Salt, pepper, and garlic powder are all good starting points. You can also add other spices, such as basil, oregano, or thyme, to taste.
  • Serve the sauce over your favorite pasta or vegetables: This sauce is great with spaghetti, macaroni, or penne. It's also delicious on chicken, fish, or meatballs.
