If you think baked beans only come from a can, you're in for a treat. Bacon, molasses and bourbon add depth and flavor to our classic recipe that's perfectly spiced with paprika, mustard and Worcestershire. A bit of brown sugar adds just the right amount of sweetness and to keep things easy, the beans require no soaking! They get tender and delicious right in the oven.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Time 5h

Yield 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 12

8 ounces thick-cut bacon, cut into 1/2-inch strips
1 large yellow onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon paprika
One 8-ounce can tomato sauce
1/3 cup molasses
1/4 cup bourbon
2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons prepared yellow mustard
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 pound dried navy beans, picked through

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. Cook the bacon in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat until browned and crisp, about 8 minutes. Add the onion and garlic and cook until softened, 4 to 5 minutes. Add the paprika and toast, stirring, about 30 seconds. Add the tomato sauce, molasses, bourbon, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, 2 teaspoons salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook 5 minutes.
  • Add the beans and 8 cups water. Bring to a boil, then cover the pot and transfer to the oven. Bake until the beans are tender, about 3 hours. (If the beans are still slightly firm, continue cooking, stirring every 45 minutes and adding more water if necessary to just cover.)
  • Once the beans are tender, uncover and increase the oven temperature to 325 degrees F. Bake until the beans are thick and browned, about 1 more hour. (Again, if the beans need more time, continue cooking, stirring occasionally and adding more water if necessary.) Remove from the oven and thin with water if necessary.

BEST IN THE WEST BAKED BEANS

Best in the West Baked Beans image

I think I clipped this recipe out of the newspaper years ago. It is always a huge hit at picnics, barbecues and get togethers. It's a nice change from the more traditional baked beans. I can't even begin to guess how many times I have handed out the recipe.

Provided by Bobbie

Categories     Beans

Time 1h30m

Yield 20 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 lb extra lean ground beef
1 lb bacon, chopped
1 onion, chopped
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup barbecue sauce
1 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons yellow mustard
4 tablespoons molasses
1 teaspoon chili powder
3/4 teaspoon pepper
2 (16 ounce) cans kidney beans, drained
2 (16 ounce) cans pork and beans
2 (16 ounce) cans lima beans, drained

Steps:

  • Brown beef, bacon and onion in large skillet. Drain.
  • Combine all ingredients except beans, mix well.
  • Add beans and stir gently.
  • Bake one hour in a 325 to 350 oven (or until hot a bubbly).
  • This recipe can easily be cut in half since it makes a rather large batch. I only use half the bacon. If you would like, you could add some more beef if cutting back on the bacon.

Tips:

  • Use dried beans for the best flavor and texture. Soaking the beans overnight before cooking will help to reduce the cooking time.
  • Add aromatics to the beans while they are cooking, such as onion, garlic, celery, and bay leaves. These will add flavor to the beans.
  • Use a variety of beans in your baked beans recipe. This will give the dish a more complex flavor and texture.
  • Don't overcook the beans. They should be tender but still hold their shape.
  • If you are using canned beans, be sure to rinse them well before adding them to the recipe.
  • Serve baked beans with your favorite sides, such as cornbread, coleslaw, or potato salad.

Conclusion:

Baked beans are a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They are also a great source of protein, fiber, and vitamins. With so many different variations on the classic recipe, there is sure to be a baked bean recipe that everyone will enjoy.
