Time 20m

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons vinegar
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 head iceberg lettuce, sliced
6 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
1/3 cup sliced almonds, toasted
1/4 cup sesame seeds, toasted
4 green onions, sliced
3/4 cup chow mein noodles

Steps:

  • Combine the first five ingredients in a container with tight fitting lid and shake well.
  • In a large bowl, add lettuce and then sprinkle remaining ingredients on top. Add the amount of dressing to your taste and toss the salad.
  • Note: To toast almonds put on cookie sheet and put in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for 2 mins, then add sesame seeds on sheet. Watch closely, so not to over toast and burn. Cook another 2 mins and check for doneness, if golden remove from oven and cool.

Tips:

  • Utilize Seasonal Produce: Embrace the flavors of the season by incorporating fresh, locally-sourced fruits and vegetables into your salads. This not only enhances taste but also supports local farmers and reduces your carbon footprint.
  • Mix Greens and Textures: Create a visually appealing and texturally exciting salad by combining different types of greens (e.g., romaine, spinach, arugula) and vegetables (e.g., cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots) with contrasting textures (e.g., crunchy, soft, chewy).
  • Experiment with Dressings: Don't limit yourself to traditional vinaigrettes; explore a variety of dressings to add unique flavors to your salad. Consider citrus-based dressings, creamy dressings (e.g., avocado, yogurt-based), or nutty dressings (e.g., tahini, pesto).
  • Add Protein and Healthy Fats: Enhance the nutritional value of your salad by incorporating protein sources like grilled chicken, tofu, salmon, or legumes. Additionally, include healthy fats from nuts, seeds, or avocados to promote satiety and nutrient absorption.
  • Balance Flavors: Strive for a harmonious balance of flavors in your salad. Combine sweet and sour elements, salty and bitter notes, and creamy and crunchy textures to create a well-rounded and enjoyable eating experience.
  • Presentation Matters: Take pride in the presentation of your salad. Arrange ingredients thoughtfully, drizzle dressing elegantly, and consider using colorful garnishes to create a visually appealing dish that entices the appetite.

Conclusion:

Crafting a delectable tossed salad is an art form that allows for endless creativity and customization. By following these comprehensive tips, you can elevate your salad game and enjoy a symphony of flavors and textures in every bite. Remember, the key to a successful salad lies in using fresh, seasonal ingredients, experimenting with different flavors and textures, and presenting your creation with pride.
