UNROLLED CABBAGE ROLLS

Unrolled Cabbage Rolls image

I started making a version of this casserole years ago because I love cabbage rolls and they take so long to prepare. I've adjusted the recipe many times but this is my current version. I have also noted lots of other recipes like this in the past couple of years so I guess it wasn't that big a leap from cabbage rolls to cabbage...

Tips:

  • Select firm and fresh cabbage leaves: Choose cabbages that are heavy for their size and have tightly packed leaves. Remove the outer leaves and use the larger, inner leaves for the rolls.
  • Blanch the cabbage leaves: Blanching helps soften the leaves and make them more pliable, making it easier to roll them. To blanch, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and immerse the cabbage leaves for a few seconds or until they turn bright green. Immediately transfer the leaves to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process.
  • Use a variety of fillings: Unrolled cabbage rolls can be filled with a variety of ingredients, including ground beef, pork, turkey, lamb, rice, vegetables, and herbs. Be creative and experiment with different combinations to find your favorite.
  • Season the filling well: Don't be afraid to season the filling generously with salt, pepper, and other herbs and spices. This will help bring out the flavors of the ingredients and make the rolls more flavorful.
  • Roll the cabbage rolls tightly: To prevent the rolls from falling apart during cooking, roll them tightly and securely. You can use toothpicks or skewers to hold the rolls together if necessary.
  • Bake or braise the cabbage rolls: Unrolled cabbage rolls can be baked or braised. Baking is a good option if you want a crispy crust, while braising results in a more tender and flavorful filling.

Conclusion:

Unrolled cabbage rolls are a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. They are a great way to use up leftover cabbage and other vegetables, and they can be easily customized to suit your own taste preferences. With a little planning and effort, you can create a delicious and satisfying meal that the whole family will love.
