PEANUT BUTTER AND PICKLE SANDWICH

Peanut Butter and Pickle Sandwich image

This sandwich does not necessarily need a recipe, given its simplicity. But it's an unlikely pairing, is peanut butter and pickle, and sometimes that is what a recipe is for -- to prod you in a direction that you never considered. Dwight Garner, a book critic for The Times, makes a strong case for this, his favorite sandwich, calling it "a thrifty and unacknowledged American classic." The vinegary snap of the pickles tempers the unctuousness of the peanut butter, and it's an unusual pantry sandwich for when luncheon meats leave you cold.

FRIED PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY SANDWICH RECIPE BY TASTY

Fried Peanut Butter And Jelly Sandwich Recipe by Tasty image

Take a stroll down memory lane with these fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! Crunchy on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside, everyone's favorite nostalgic sandwich is made even better with a lemony strawberry sauce and a dusting of powdered sugar.

Provided by Breana Jackson

Categories     Desserts

Time 20m

Yield 2 servings

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup fresh strawberry , or frozen, stemmed and quartered
½ cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1 tablespoon lemon juice
vegetable oil, for frying
4 slices white bread
¼ cup creamy peanut butter
¼ cup strawberry jelly, preserves
1 cup pancake mix, batter prepared according to package instructions
powdered sugar, for dusting

Steps:

  • In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat, combine the strawberries, granulated sugar, lemon zest, and lemon juice. Cook until the berries have started to break down into a thick sauce, 10-15 minutes.
  • Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a cast iron skillet or deep pan over medium-high heat until the temperature reaches 350°F (180°C). To test the oil temperature, add a couple drops of pancake batter; if it sizzles immediately, the oil is hot enough.
  • Spread the peanut butter over 2 slices of bread. Spread the jelly over the remaining 2 slices of bread. Sandwich the peanut butter and jelly halves together.
  • Coat each sandwich in the pancake batter. Carefully place in the hot oil and fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Transfer to a paper-towel lined plate to drain.
  • Cut the sandwiches in half on the diagonal. Place on a plate, pour the strawberry syrup on top, and dust with powdered sugar.
  • Enjoy!

Tips:

  • For a crispier sandwich, use day-old bread as it holds up better to the peanut butter and jelly.
  • If you like a gooey sandwich, spread the peanut butter and jelly all the way to the edges of the bread.
  • If you prefer a less messy sandwich, spread the peanut butter and jelly only in the center of the bread.
  • For a fun twist, try using different types of bread, such as sourdough, wheat, or rye.
  • You can also add other ingredients to your sandwich, such as sliced bananas, honey, or chocolate chips.

Conclusion:

The peanut butter and jelly sandwich is a classic for a reason. It's simple, delicious, and satisfying. With its endless variations, there's a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for everyone. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give this classic sandwich a try.
