DAD'S SPICE COOKIES image

Yield 4 dozen

Number Of Ingredients 13

3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar, plus more for rolling
1 egg
1/4 cup molasses
2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp ground allspice

Steps:

  • Cream shortening; gradually add 1 cup sugar, beating well at medium speed of an electric mixer. Add egg and molasses; mix well. Combine flour and next 8 ingredients; mix well. Add about one-fourth of flour mixture at a time to cream mixture, beating until smooth after each addition. Chill dough 1 hour. Heat oven to 375-degrees. Shape dough into 1-inch balls and roll in sugar. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookies. Bake 9 to 11 minutes (top will crack). Cool on wire racks.
