I used McIntosh apples for this but Granny Smith will do also, though you might have to bake the crisp slightly longer if using Granny Smith apples. This is the best apple crisp!

The neighbor who shared this recipe with me predicted that I'd serve it often, just as she has for more than 30 years. It's easy to put together and is wonderfully fruity. I like to serve it with ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. -Diann Mallehan, Grand Rapids, Michigan

APPLE WALNUT CRISP WITH MAPLE SAUCE - SKI TIP LODGE

Apple Walnut Crisp with Maple Sauce - Ski Tip Lodge image

Categories     Apple

Number Of Ingredients 18

1 1/4 cup all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 tablespoon sugar
7 tablespoon cold, unsalted butter, cut into bits
1 large egg yolk
2 tablespoon cold water
1/4 cup unsalted butter
3 pound Pink Lady apples, peeled and sliced
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
2 tablespoon bourbon
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
1/4 cup unsalted butter, cut into bits
1 cup pure maple syrup
3/4 teaspoon vanilla

Steps:

  • Make the dough: Into a bowl sift together the flour, salt, and sugar and blend in the butter until the mixture resembles a course meal.
  • Add the egg yolk and 1 TBS of the water, toss the mixture until the water is incorporated, adding enough of the remaining water as necessary.
  • Form the dough into a ball.
  • Dust the dough with flour and chill covered for 2 hours
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • On a lightly floured surface roll the dough into a 13" round.
  • Fit the dough into a lightly buttered 12" tart pan with removable fluted rim and crimp the edge decoratively.
  • Pierce all over with a fork and bake crust in the middle of the oven for 20 minutes or until golden
  • Make the filling: In a heavy kettle cook the apples, sugar, cinnamon, walnuts, and bourbon over moderate heat stirring, for 20 minutes, or the apples are softened
  • Make the topping: In a bowl blend the flour, sugar, walnuts and butter until the mixture resembles a course meal.
  • Spoon the filling into the crust spreasing it evenly, sprinkle it with the topping and bake crisp in the middle of the oven for 30 minutes or the top is golden.
  • Make the Sauce: Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan and stir over medium heat until ice cream is melted and ingredients are combined.
  • Serve crisp with warm sauce.

Tips:

  • Fresh Fruit is Key: Use fresh, crisp apples for the best flavor and texture. Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn are excellent choices.
  • Toss Apples in Lemon Juice: To prevent browning, toss the apple slices in lemon juice before adding them to the crisp mixture.
  • Don't Overwork the Dough: Mix the topping ingredients until just combined. Overworking the dough will make it tough.
  • Bake Until Golden Brown: Bake the crisp until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. This usually takes about 45 minutes.
  • Let It Cool: Allow the crisp to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. This will help the filling to set.
  • Serve with Maple Sauce: For an extra special touch, serve the crisp with a drizzle of maple sauce.

Conclusion:

This apple walnut crisp with maple sauce is a classic dessert that is perfect for any occasion. It's easy to make, and the combination of apples, walnuts, and maple syrup is simply irresistible. Whether you're serving it to family or friends, this crisp is sure to be a hit.
