Categories     Entree     Dinner

Time 1h45m

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
1/2 pound ground pork (90/10)
1/2 cup minced onion
1 egg, beaten
3/4 cup applesauce (unsweetened)
1 cup breadcrumbs (fine, plain, unseasoned)
3 tablespoons ketchup
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Optional: 4 tablespoons ketchup or barbecue sauce, for topping

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 F.
  • Lightly grease a 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan.
  • In a large bowl, combine the 2 kinds of ground meat with the chopped onion, egg, applesauce, breadcrumbs, 3 tablespoons of ketchup, salt, and pepper; mix thoroughly with your hands.
  • Pat the meatloaf mixture into the prepared loaf pan.
  • Bake the meatloaf in the preheated oven for 1 1/2 hours.
  • If using the optional topping, take the meatloaf out of the oven about 10 to 15 minutes before it's done. Carefully pour off excess grease and spread the 4 tablespoons of ketchup or barbecue sauce over the top. Return the loaf to the oven and continue baking until it's done.

  • Let the meatloaf cool for 10 minutes and then remove it to a platter. Slice and serve.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of apples. Different apples will give your applesauce meatloaf different flavors. For a classic flavor, use Granny Smith apples. For a sweeter flavor, use Honeycrisp or Fuji apples. For a tart flavor, use Braeburn or Pink Lady apples.
  • Don't peel the apples. The skins of apples contain nutrients and flavor. Leaving them on will give your applesauce meatloaf a more complex flavor.
  • Cook the applesauce until it is thick and flavorful. This will help to bind the meatloaf together and give it a delicious flavor.
  • Use ground beef or ground turkey. Either type of meat can be used to make applesauce meatloaf. If you are using ground turkey, be sure to use a variety that is at least 85% lean.
  • Add your favorite seasonings. You can add any seasonings you like to your applesauce meatloaf. Some popular choices include garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and salt and pepper.
  • Bake the meatloaf until it is cooked through. The internal temperature of the meatloaf should reach 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Let the meatloaf rest before slicing it. This will help to keep the meatloaf from falling apart.

Conclusion:

Applesauce meatloaf is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal. It is a great way to use up leftover applesauce, and it is also a good way to get your kids to eat their vegetables. With its simple ingredients and delicious flavor, applesauce meatloaf is sure to be a hit with your family and friends.
