Yield Makes 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 cups fresh or thawed frozen cranberries
2 firm-ripe pears such as Bartlett, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
2 apples such as Gala, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 cup sugar, divided
1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
3/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 cup old-fashioned oats
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 stick unsalted butter, softened

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 425°F with rack in middle.
  • Stir together fruits, 1/2 cup sugar, cornstarch, and vanilla and place in a buttered shallow 2-quart baking dish.
  • Stir together oats, flour, salt, and remaining 1/2 cup sugar. Blend in butter with your fingertips until mixture forms small clumps. Scatter over fruit and bake until juices are bubbling and topping is golden brown, about 20 minutes. Cool slightly before serving.

Tips:

  • Choose the right fruit. Apples, pears, and berries are all classic choices for crumble, but you can also use other fruits like peaches, apricots, or rhubarb. Just be sure to choose fruits that are in season and ripe.
  • Don't overfill the crumble topping. A thin layer of topping is all you need to get that perfect crispy texture. If you add too much topping, it will be soggy and undercooked.
  • Bake the crumble until the topping is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling. This usually takes about 30-40 minutes, but keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't overcook.
  • Serve the crumble warm with a scoop of ice cream or whipped cream. This is the best way to enjoy the contrasting textures and flavors of the crumble.

Conclusion:

Autumn crumble is a classic dessert that is perfect for any occasion. It's easy to make, delicious, and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With so many different variations to choose from, there's sure to be a crumble recipe that everyone will love.
