vegetable oil, for deep-frying, plus 1 T
3 onions, Vidalia
4 cups buttermilk
1 egg
4 cups flour, all-purpose
1 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more for sprinkling on hot rings
1/4 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground

  • Drop the onion rings frist into the buttermilk mixture and then into the flour, making sure they are well coated with each dip. Shake the excess flour off the rings and fry in batches until golden brown, about 3 minutes. Remove from the oil, sprinkle with salt, and serve hot.

Tips:

  • Use a sharp knife to thinly slice the onions for even cooking.
  • Soak the onion slices in buttermilk or milk for at least 30 minutes to tenderize them and help the breading adhere.
  • Use a combination of bread crumbs, flour, and seasonings for the breading to create a crispy and flavorful coating.
  • Dip the onion slices in the egg wash before coating them in the breading to help the breading stick.
  • Fry the onion rings in hot oil until they are golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  • Drain the onion rings on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  • Serve the onion rings hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
