PERFECT OVEN-BAKED BROWN RICE

Perfect Oven-Baked Brown Rice image

I got this one from "The Best Recipe" by Cook's Illustrated. It's a very easy way to make brown rice that comes out perfect every time. No more sticky, clumpy, waterlogged goop! This rice is tender and separate and delicious. Notice that the ratio of water to rice is much less than the oft-quoted 2 to 1. This is the key to this recipe, so make sure to measure carefully.

Categories     Brown Rice

Time 1h10m

Yield 10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

3 1/3 cups brown rice
5 cups water
1 teaspoon salt
4 teaspoons vegetable oil

Steps:

  • Place oven rack in middle position. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • Bring the water to a boil. Keep the water covered as it boils so you don't lose too much as steam.
  • When the oven is at 375, put the water, rice, and salt into an ovenproof pot with a tight-fitting lid. I have successfully used pyrex dishes and cast-iron dutch ovens. If you don't have a good lid, you can also use a double layer of foil. Just make sure it's sealed well around the edges.
  • Pop it in the oven.
  • The rice is done when it is tender and the water is all gone. It usually takes an hour. When it's done, fluff it with a fork and serve. Yum! So simple and good!

BROWN RICE (BAKED)

Brown Rice (Baked) image

Brown rice is SO much better for you than white rice. It has more nutrients and about 3 times more fiber than white rice does. I never really cared for brown rice UNTIL I tasted this one. You can do as many variations as you like with it. Add your favorite herbs, spices or veggies to it. Make it vegetarian by using veggie cubes instead of chicken. The rice turns out perfectly fluffy and delicious. The aroma that fills your house while it's baking is wonderful and it's hard to wait until it's done to sneak a taste. As it bakes the bay leaves will rise to the top so they can be easily 'fished' out of the casserole before serving. I like to top the finished rice with freshly chopped cilantro and a twist of black pepper. For a nice crunch you can add chopped water chestnuts.

Time 1h10m

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 14

1 cup brown rice, uncooked
2 tablespoons canola oil (or butter)
2 1/2 cups water
2 bay leaves
2 chicken bouillon cubes
1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 teaspoons dried onion flakes
1/2 teaspoon dried parsley

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F.

  • Bring to a boil.
  • When rice is golden and ready, pour rice into a covered 2 quart casserole dish.

  • Fluff with fork before serving.

FOOLPROOF BAKED BROWN RICE

Foolproof Baked Brown Rice image

I got so tired of doing brown rice on the stovetop -- messes from sputtery lidsz and boil-overs, burnt or stuck rice in the pot. But I really didn't want another appliance (rice cooker)... But this method is GREAT and foolproof! NO MESS, easy and you don't hav to watch like a hawk. I'm sure this would work for any kind of rice, but you'd have to adjust time and the amount of water. I'll never do brown rice on the stovvetop again!

Categories     Brown Rice

Time 35m

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 1/2 cups brown rice
2 3/4 cups water
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon olive oil

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F.
  • Put water, rice, salt and oil in an oven-safe pot with a tight-fitting lid. (A dutch oven works great.) Bring to a boil on the stove.
  • AS SOON AS IT BOILS, remove from heat and put in the preheated oven.
  • Bake 30 - 35 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and fluff with a fork.
  • NOTE: It's okay if there seems to be a little bit of water left when you take it out of the oven; it will be absorbed as it sits.
  • NOTE 2: You can use more or less of the oil and salt as your taste and diet dictate, but using at least a little of each makes the rice taste better (the salt) and prevents the grains from clumping together (the oil).

NO-FUSS PERFECT BAKED BROWN RICE

NO-FUSS PERFECT BAKED BROWN RICE image

Categories     Rice

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 2/3 cups brown rice, uncooked
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 cups boiling water
2 teaspoons canola oil

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x9 baking dish.
  • Place rice in prepared baking dish; sprinkle salt and oil on top. Pour boiling water over rice. Cover baking dish tightly with double layer of aluminum foil and pinch edges to seal.
  • Bake in center of preheated oven until water is absorbed, about 1 hour.
  • Remove rice from oven, uncover, and fluff with fork.
  • Note: This recipe works for any type of brown rice.

Tips:

  • Choose the right brown rice: Short-grain brown rice is best for baking, as it has a higher starch content that helps it hold its shape and texture. Long-grain brown rice can also be used, but it will have a slightly different texture.
  • Soak the rice before cooking: Soaking the rice for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight, helps to reduce the cooking time and makes the rice more tender.
  • Use a well-seasoned baking dish: A well-seasoned baking dish will help to prevent the rice from sticking. If you don't have a well-seasoned baking dish, you can grease it with cooking spray or butter.
  • Bake the rice at a high temperature: Baking the rice at a high temperature (400°F or higher) will help to create a crispy crust on the top of the rice.
  • Let the rice rest before serving: Let the rice rest for at least 5 minutes before serving, to allow the flavors to meld and the rice to firm up.

Conclusion:

Baked brown rice is a delicious and healthy side dish that can be enjoyed with a variety of main courses. It is a good source of fiber, protein, and vitamins, and it is also low in calories and fat. With a little planning and preparation, you can easily make baked brown rice at home. So next time you're looking for a healthy and flavorful side dish, give baked brown rice a try.
