CANDIED KIELBASA

Kielbasa, also called kielbasy or Polish sausage, is a spicy sausage usually made with pork (though beef is sometimes added). It comes in chunky links, and is sold precooked. I haven't met anyone yet who didn't like this dish. I even like it and I really don't care for kielbasa that much! Another bonus is that it is easy to make, and is yet another recipe for your slow cooker.

Categories     Sausage     Braise

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 cup (packed) brown sugar
1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup prepared horseradish
2 pounds kielbasa sausage, thinly sliced

Steps:

  • In a slow cooker combine the sugar, ketchup and horseradish. Add the sausage, and mix well.
  • Cook on High until it starts to boil. Reduce heat to Low, and cook until sauce thickens, about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Note: Try using a liner in your slow cooker for easier cleanup.

Tips:

  • Choose high-quality kielbasa: Opt for a kielbasa made with fresh, flavorful meat and avoid ones with excessive fillers. Look for kielbasa that is firm to the touch and has a deep red color.
  • Slice the kielbasa evenly: Cut the kielbasa into uniform pieces to ensure even cooking and caramelization. This will also help the candy coating adhere evenly.
  • Use a large skillet: A large skillet will provide ample space for the kielbasa to cook without overcrowding. This will help prevent steaming and ensure that the kielbasa browns properly.
  • Cook the kielbasa over medium heat: Medium heat will allow the kielbasa to cook through without burning the sugar coating. Be patient and resist the urge to increase the heat, as this can result in a burnt exterior and an undercooked interior.
  • Stir the kielbasa frequently: Stir the kielbasa regularly to prevent it from sticking to the pan and to ensure that it cooks evenly. Use a spatula to gently flip the kielbasa pieces so that all sides are browned.
  • Add the brown sugar and maple syrup mixture gradually: Slowly add the brown sugar and maple syrup mixture to the skillet, stirring constantly to prevent clumping. This will help create a smooth, glossy glaze that coats the kielbasa evenly.
  • Simmer the kielbasa until the glaze thickens: Bring the glaze to a simmer and let it bubble gently for a few minutes, or until it has thickened and reduced slightly. This will help the glaze adhere to the kielbasa and create a sticky, caramelized coating.
  • Serve the candied kielbasa warm: Candied kielbasa is best served warm, when the glaze is still soft and gooey. It can be enjoyed on its own as a snack or appetizer, or served alongside roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, or your favorite side dish.

Conclusion:

Candied kielbasa is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed as a snack, appetizer, or main course. With its combination of sweet and savory flavors, it's sure to be a hit at your next party or gathering. So next time you're looking for a fun and easy recipe, give candied kielbasa a try. With just a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can create a dish that your friends and family will love.
