Categories     Pork     Vegetable     Bake     Quick & Easy

Yield makes4-6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 7

1/2 pound ham cut into 1/2 inch cubes
1/2 ponnd russet potatoes, with their skin, cut into 1/2 inch cubes
1/2 pound fresh green beans cut into 1 inch pieces
3 tablespooons butter
3 tablespoons flour
1 small onion, finely minced
4 ounces plus 1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare potatoes and place in a steamer basket over boiling water. Cover and steam while preparing green beans. Add green beans to potatoes and steam about 5 minutes more. Just long enough that potatoes can be pierced easily with a fork. While veggies are steaming, prepare cheese sauce. Melt butter in a medium sauce pan. Add onion and saute over medium heat for 3-5 minutes, until translucent. Add flour, and stir until flour is incorporated. Cook 1-2 minutes to get rid of raw flour taste. Add milk and stir constantly until mixture has thickened--about 5 minutes. Add grated cheese. Season with salt and pepper. Pour sauce over ham mixture and top with remaining cheese. Bake, uncovered until heated through, 10-15 minutes. Place under broiler for 3-4 minutes to brown cheese, if desired.

Tips:

  • For a crispy potato crust, use Yukon Gold or russet potatoes and slice them thinly. You can also parboil the potatoes for a few minutes before baking to help them crisp up.
  • Use a high-quality cheddar cheese for the best flavor. You can also use a combination of cheddar and another type of cheese, such as mozzarella or Parmesan.
  • If you don't have any ham, you can use bacon, sausage, or ground beef instead.
  • To make the dish vegetarian, omit the ham and use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.
  • This dish can be assembled ahead of time and baked later. Just cover it tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking.

Conclusion:

This cheesy ham and potato bake is a classic comfort food dish that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. So next time you are looking for a hearty and satisfying meal, give this recipe a try.
