Yield Makes about 3 cups

Number Of Ingredients 5

3 pounds apples, peeled, cored, cut into 3/4-inch pieces
1 cup water
1/3 cup (packed) golden brown sugar
2 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Combine apples, 1 cup water and brown sugar in heavy medium saucepan. Bring to boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat, cover and simmer until apples are very tender, about 25 minutes. Uncover and simmer until almost all liquid in saucepan has evaporated, about 6 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in lemon juice and cinnamon. Cool 30 minutes.
  • Using fork, mash apple mixture until coarse and chunky. Serve at room temperature or refrigerate until cold. (Applesauce can be prepared 3 days ahead. Cover and keep refrigerated.)

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: Use firm, tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp. These apples hold their shape well and won't turn to mush when cooked.
  • Peel and core the apples: This will make them easier to eat and will help the applesauce to cook evenly.
  • Add some spices: Cinnamon is a classic spice for applesauce, but you can also try adding nutmeg, ginger, or cloves. A pinch of salt can also help to balance out the sweetness of the apples.
  • Cook the applesauce over low heat: This will help to prevent the applesauce from burning or sticking to the pot.
  • Stir the applesauce frequently: This will help to prevent the applesauce from sticking to the pot and will also help to distribute the spices evenly.
  • Serve the applesauce warm or cold: Applesauce can be enjoyed warm or cold. If you're serving it warm, you can top it with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Conclusion:

Cinnamon applesauce is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It's also a great way to use up leftover apples. With just a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can make delicious cinnamon applesauce that the whole family will enjoy.
