CRANBERRY ORANGE SAUCE RELISH

Cranberry Orange Sauce Relish image

This is "grown up" cranberry sauce to go with turkey or poultry. It is different from the rest due to the Kosher salt and pepper. It is a bit tarter than the sweet kind but perfect to compliment any meal. The orangy nutmeg flavor and the cinnamon stick addition make this a winner. The ease of making makes you not want to go back to canned ever. From a small town site fairoaks carmichael patch. The sauce is not overly thick or overly runny. It is spot on. If you want it sweeter add sugar to taste and ease on the salt and pepper. Brings out the meats' flavor. Enjoy! ChefDLH.

Winter Canning - Cranberry Orange Relish image

Cranberry Orange Relish adds a bright, tart flavor to an everyday meal.

Provided by Renee Pottle

Categories     Side Dishes

Time 20m

Yield 4 half pints

Number Of Ingredients 4

4 cups fresh or frozen cranberries (about 1½ bags)
1 large navel orange
½ cup water
½ - 1 cup sugar

Steps:

  • Wash orange. Cut unpeeled orange into 6-8 pieces, removing seeds.
  • Place the cranberries in a food processor. Process until evenly chopped. Spoon into a large saucepan.
  • Place the orange pieces in a food processor. Process until evenly chopped. Add to the cranberries.
  • Add water and sugar - less sugar if you like a tart relish, more if you prefer it sweeter.
  • Simmer over medium heat until cranberries are hot and soft, 5-10 minutes.
  • Ladle into clean half-pint canning jars.
  • Relish may be frozen. It also keeps well in the refrigerator for up to a month.

Tips:

  • Prep Ahead: Make the relish a day before serving to allow the flavors to meld and deepen.
  • Use Fresh Cranberries: Fresh cranberries offer a more vibrant taste and texture compared to frozen ones.
  • Choose Good-Quality Oranges: Select oranges that are heavy for their size and have a deep orange color.
  • Slice Oranges Thinly: This helps release more juice and flavor into the relish.
  • Use a Sharp Knife: A sharp knife ensures clean, even cuts and prevents the cranberries from being crushed.
  • Don't Overcook: Cook the relish just until the cranberries soften and pop, about 10-15 minutes.
  • Add Nuts for Crunch: Chopped walnuts or pecans add a nice textural contrast to the relish.
  • Serve Chilled: Always serve the relish chilled to maintain its freshness and vibrant flavors.
