Categories     Condiment/Spread     Fruit     Thanksgiving     Vegetarian     Quick & Easy     Dinner     Simmer

Yield about 4 cups

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 cups dark brown sugar, firmly packed
1.5 cups raisins
1 orange (unpeeled)
1 lemon (unpeeled)
1 cup canned pitted dark sweet cherries (drained)
.5 cup distilled white vinegar
.5 cinnamon stick
.5 tsp ground cinnamon
.5 tsp ground cloves
.5 tsp nutmeg, freshly grated
1.5 cup fresh cranberries

Steps:

  • Quarter and seed orange and lemon, then cut into 1/4" pieces. Combine all ingredients except cranberries in heavy large saucepan. Bring mixture to boil over medium heat, stirring frequently. Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes. Add cranberries and simmer until they begin to pop, about 5 more minutes. Remove cinnamon stick. Cover and refrigerate until cold. (Can be prepared 1 week ahead.)

Tips:

  • Choose fresh and ripe cranberries and cherries for the best flavor.
  • Use a food processor or chopper to quickly and easily chop the cranberries and cherries.
  • If you don't have a food processor or chopper, you can finely chop the cranberries and cherries by hand.
  • Be sure to remove the pits from the cherries before chopping them.
  • Add sugar to taste. If you like a sweeter relish, add more sugar. If you prefer a tarter relish, add less sugar.
  • Let the relish chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
  • Serve the relish with turkey, chicken, or ham. It also makes a great addition to a cheese plate.
