CROCK POT CUBED STEAK

I got this one off the Butcher Market's website. I love cube steak and I love the crock pot so I had to try it. This was so tender you could cut it with a spoon. It's great served with mashed potatoes and green peas.

Categories     Steaks and Chops

Time 5h30m

Number Of Ingredients 7

6-8 cubed steaks
flour for coating
salt and pepper
beef base or beef bouillon
1 large onion - chopped
1 c mushrooms if desired
1/4 c corn starch

Steps:

  • 1. Heat enough oil in a fry pan to brown steaks. Salt and Pepper the steaks. Coat all pieces in flour. Brown each steak on both sides then put in crock pot or slow cooker.
  • 2. When done Browning steaks, saute onion in fry pan and add to crock pot. Add mushrooms now too. Put about a good Tablespoon of beef base in about 4 cups of water, along with salt and pepper to taste. Add this to crock pot, making sure you have enough liquid to cover steaks well. Turn on low and let cook for 4-6 hours until fork tender.
  • 3. I like to dip out about 2-3 cups of the liquid and put in sauce pan heat on stove top until hot. Mix cornstrach with about a cup of water and add slowly to beef liquid and stir, stir, stir until thickened. Add this to the cube steak in the slow cooker and turn up on high for about the last 30-40 minutes and allow to thicken.

Tips:

  • Choose the right cut of meat: Chuck steak or round steak are good options for cubed steak.
  • Tenderize the meat: Pounding the meat with a meat mallet or using a fork to poke holes in it will help tenderize it.
  • Season the meat: Season the meat with salt, pepper, and any other desired seasonings before cooking.
  • Brown the meat: Browning the meat in a skillet before adding it to the crock pot will help develop flavor.
  • Add liquid: Add enough liquid to the crock pot to cover the meat. Water, broth, or tomato sauce can be used.
  • Cook on low: Cook the meat on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours, or until the meat is tender.
  • Thicken the sauce: If desired, thicken the sauce with a cornstarch slurry. To make a cornstarch slurry, mix equal parts cornstarch and water until smooth. Stir the slurry into the crock pot and cook until the sauce has thickened.
  • Serve: Serve the cubed steak with mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.
