Tips:

  • Choose the right mince: Beef mince is the most common choice for mince stew, but you can also use lamb or pork mince. If you're using beef mince, choose a mince that is at least 80% lean. This will help to reduce the amount of fat in the stew.
  • Brown the mince: Browning the mince before adding it to the stew will help to develop its flavor and prevent it from becoming dry. To brown the mince, heat a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the mince and cook, stirring frequently, until it is browned on all sides.
  • Use a variety of vegetables: Vegetables add flavor, texture, and nutrition to mince stew. Some good choices for vegetables to use in mince stew include carrots, celery, onions, potatoes, and peas.
  • Use a good quality stock: The stock you use in your mince stew will have a big impact on the flavor of the stew. Use a good quality stock, such as beef stock, lamb stock, or vegetable stock.
  • Season the stew well: Season the stew with salt, pepper, and other herbs and spices to taste. Some good choices for herbs and spices to use in mince stew include thyme, rosemary, oregano, and bay leaves.
  • Simmer the stew for at least 30 minutes: Simmering the stew for at least 30 minutes will help to develop the flavors and tenderize the meat. You can simmer the stew for longer if you have time, but 30 minutes is the minimum amount of time needed to cook the stew through.

Conclusion:

New Zealand mince stew is a hearty and flavorful dish that is perfect for a cold winter night. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. With a few simple tips, you can make a delicious mince stew that your whole family will enjoy.
