Time 8h20m

Yield 10

Number Of Ingredients 15

3 tablespoons olive oil
1 pound lean ground turkey
1 cup red bell pepper, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 (16 ounce) can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 (16 ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 cup rinsed and drained canned black-eyed peas
1 (15 ounce) can low sodium tomato sauce
1 dried habanero pepper, chopped
1 cup frozen corn kernels
1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried sage
salt to taste

Steps:

  • Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground turkey and cook until no longer pink and evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, place the cooked meat into a slow cooker, and drain any oil from the skillet.
  • Using the same skillet, heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium-high heat. Stir in the red pepper and garlic; cook until tender, about 3 minutes. Stir into the slow cooker with the turkey.
  • Stir the kidney beans, black beans, black-eyed peas, tomato sauce, and habanero pepper into the slow cooker with the turkey mixture. Set on High and cook for 3 hours, or on Low for 7 hours.
  • One hour before the time is up, stir in the corn, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, basil, and sage. Continue cooking the chili for the remaining hour. Season to taste with salt.

HABANERO CHILE SALSA

Habanero Chile Salsa image

Categories     Condiment/Spread     Sauce     Blender     Garlic     Broil     Super Bowl     Low Carb     Lime     Hot Pepper     Spring     Tomatillo     Cilantro     Bon Appétit

Yield Makes about 3 cups

Number Of Ingredients 7

16 medium tomatillos (about 2 pounds), husked, rinsed
1/2 medium white onion
4 garlic cloves, peeled
1 1 1/2-inch-long fresh habanero chile
1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Preheat broiler. Line rimmed baking sheet with foil. Arrange tomatillos, onion, garlic, and chile on prepared baking sheet. Broil until vegetables blacken in spots, about 5 minutes per side for chile and about 10 minutes per side for tomatillos, onion, and garlic.
  • Transfer vegetables and any accumulated juices to blender. Add cilantro, lime juice, and salt. Puree until smooth. Transfer salsa to bowl. Cover and refrigerate until cold, at least 1 hour and up to 4 hours. Season salsa to taste with more salt.

Tips:

  • Choose the right habanero peppers: Look for peppers that are firm and brightly colored, with no blemishes or bruises. When handling habaneros, wear gloves to protect your skin from the capsaicin, the compound that gives them their heat.
  • Use caution when preparing habaneros: Habaneros are very hot, so be careful when handling them. Avoid touching your eyes or nose, and wash your hands thoroughly after handling them.
  • Start with a small amount of habanero: When using habaneros in recipes, start with a small amount and adjust to taste. A little goes a long way!
  • Use habaneros in moderation: Habaneros are a powerful ingredient, so use them sparingly. Too much habanero can overwhelm the other flavors in a dish.
  • Pair habaneros with other flavors: Habaneros pair well with a variety of other flavors, such as citrus, garlic, ginger, and cilantro.
  • Experiment with different ways to use habaneros: Habaneros can be used in a variety of dishes, including salsas, sauces, soups, stews, and chili. You can also use them to make habanero powder or flakes, which can be added to dishes for a spicy kick.

Conclusion:

Habanero peppers are a delicious and versatile ingredient that can add a spicy kick to any dish. If you're looking to add some heat to your cooking, habaneros are a great option. Just be sure to use them in moderation and take precautions when handling them.
