Homemade buttered breadcrumbs are a versatile ingredient that can be used to add flavor and texture to a variety of dishes. They are made simply by combining bread, butter, and seasonings, and can be made with a variety of different types of bread, including white, wheat, and sourdough. Buttered breadcrumbs can be used to top casseroles, stuff poultry, or add a crispy coating to fried foods. They can also be used as a binder for meatballs and other meat dishes.

BUTTERED BREADCRUMBS
Buttered breadcrumbs can be used to top casseroles and au gratin dishes or as garnish for vegetables. For extra rich buttered breadcrumbs, double the amount of butter. This uses Soft Breadcrumbs which I posted separately. Variations: Add to taste grated parmesan cheese, minced parsley, minced toasted walnuts, toasted almonds or toasted sesame seeds.

SHRED, HEAD, BUTTER AND BREAD
Steps:
- Fill your largest pot 3/4 full with water and bring to a boil on high heat. Melt the butter and croutons in a skillet. Add the mustard and caraway seeds and stir over medium heat until the butter browns and smells nutty. Remove the skillet from the heat, but leave dressing in the pan. Add the salt and sugar to the boiling water and cook until dissolved. Place the cabbage in the boiling water and cook for 2 minutes exactly. Drain the cabbage in the bowl of the salad spinner or colander. Spin the cabbage to remove any excess water. Add the cabbage to the butter-crumb dressing and toss to coat thoroughly.;

Tips:
- Use fresh, high-quality bread for the best flavor and texture.
- Allow the bread to dry out slightly before making the breadcrumbs. This will help them to toast more evenly and prevent them from becoming soggy.
- Toast the breadcrumbs in a single layer in a preheated oven. This will help them to brown evenly and prevent them from steaming.
- Stir the breadcrumbs frequently while toasting. This will help them to toast evenly and prevent them from burning.
- Use unsalted butter to make the buttered breadcrumbs. This will allow you to control the amount of salt in the final product.
- Add the butter to the breadcrumbs while they are still warm. This will help the butter to melt and coat the breadcrumbs evenly.
- Season the buttered breadcrumbs with salt, pepper, and other herbs and spices to taste.
- Store the buttered breadcrumbs in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
