This is an actual recipe from a former employee of a popular drive-in restaurant. Crispy coated onion rings like the pro's make!

Provided by JeanieMomof3

Categories     Side Dish     Vegetables     Onion

Time 18m

Yield 3

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 large onion, cut into 1/4-inch slices
1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup milk, or as needed
¾ cup dry bread crumbs
seasoned salt to taste
1 quart oil for frying, or as needed

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a deep-fryer to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C).
  • Separate the onion slices into rings, and set aside. In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Dip the onion slices into the flour mixture until they are all coated; set aside. Whisk the egg and milk into the flour mixture using a fork. Dip the floured rings into the batter to coat, then place on a wire rack to drain until the batter stops dripping. The wire rack may be placed over a sheet of aluminum foil for easier clean up. Spread the bread crumbs out on a plate or shallow dish. Place rings one at a time into the crumbs, and scoop the crumbs up over the ring to coat. Give it a hard tap as you remove it from the crumbs. The coating should cling very well. Repeat with remaining rings.

ONION RINGS WITH A KICK!

Onion Rings With a Kick! image

Delicious Onion Rings with Chipotle Powder. It has a smokey flavored kick to them. Measurements are approximate; I eyeball it. I deep fry. I originaly started with the Fried Vegetables recipe on the back of the Kentucky Kernel Seasoned Flour from Hudgson Mill, Inc.. It was way too salty for my taste. So I added the rest, and now I love the taste. Probably good for other vegetables too.

Categories     Lunch/Snacks

Time 30m

Yield 2 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 large vidalia onion
5 tablespoons kentuckey kernel seasoned flour
1 large egg
2 tablespoons water
1/2 cup artisan 100% organic all-purpose wheat flour (King Arthur brand)
1 tablespoon powdered chipotle pepper (I like things medium hot.)
3/4 tablespoon garlic powder (I tend to go heavy on the garlic)
1/2 tablespoon onion powder
peanut oil (for frying)

Steps:

  • Preheat deep fryer oil to 350 deg.
  • Mix batter: Kentuckey Kernel Flour, egg and water.
  • Slice onion in thick rings, and separated.
  • Mix DRY INGREDIENTS [mix in large plastic baggie]: All purpose flour, Chipotle Chili Powder, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, and set aside.
  • Dip individual onion rings into batter.
  • Take onion rings out of batter and place in dry ingredients, coat liberally.
  • Fry a few coated onions in at least 2 inches of 350 deg. oil for 2-3 minutes. Several batches may be needed. I just keep the onion rings in the baggie until I have room for them in the oil.

AMAZING CRISPY FRIED ONION RINGS

Amazing Crispy Fried Onion Rings image

These onion rings are perfectly coated by the batter; not overly thick batter that hides the taste of the onions. I prefer to slice regular onions thin so that the result is a fine, crisp onion ring. I challenge you to try this one out on friends using your favorite recipe. I think it is fantastic and hope you will, too.

Provided by DeSouter

Categories     Onions

Time 15m

Yield 4-6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

3 large yellow onions
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup cornmeal (or corn muffin mix, as a substitute)
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/3 cup milk (or more if desired or necessary)

Steps:

  • In a 3 quart pot, heat about 3-4 inches of vegetable oil on medium to medium high heat.
  • Combine all dry ingredients in a medium sized bowl and mix in milk with a whisk, adding more milk if needed until mixture is the consistency is like a thin-medium pancake batter.
  • Cut onions into thin rings and toss in batter.
  • Place a single ring into the oil to test for appropriate heat. Onion ring should sizzle and start to brown immediately.
  • Place small batches of onion rings into the oil and when they turn dark golden brown on one side, flip them over to the othe side with a slotted spoon or carving fork.
  • Drain on a paper towel-lined plate. Repeat until all onions are done. (Add a bit more milk to the batter if it appears that the last batch isn't getting coated enough.).
  • I like to salt the cooked onion rings, but that is optional.

Categories     Onions

Time 25m

Yield 20-30 Rings, 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

3 medium onions
1/2 cup flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
shake paprika
shake seasoning salt
1/2 cup water

Steps:

  • Mix flour, baking powder, paprika, seasoning salt and water. Stir until smooth.
  • Slice onions 1/8-1/4" inch thick and seperate into rings.
  • Drop onions into batter in bowl and stir gently with a spoon. This saves time, over dipping each ring separately into batter. Make sure all onion rings are coated with batter.
  • Using a fork, drop one onion ring into fat to test temperature. Your onion ring should not cook too quickly or turn dark. If necessary, reduce temperature. You want your fried onion rings to puff up and turn golden brown, not overcook. If they over cook they will taste bitter.
  • When fat is ready, gently drop onion rings into pot or place in fryer basket and lower into fryer.
  • When onions rings are golden, using a slotted spoon lift into a metal strainer to drain. If using a fryer, simply lift the basket and allow your onion rings to drain.

Tips:

  • Choose the right onions: Use yellow or white onions for a crispy coating and a mild flavor. Red onions can also be used, but they have a stronger flavor.
  • Cut the onions evenly: This will help them cook evenly. Cut the onions into 1/2-inch thick slices, then separate the rings.
  • Use a light batter: A heavy batter will make the onion rings greasy. Use a batter made with all-purpose flour, milk, eggs, and salt.
  • Season the batter: Add some garlic powder, onion powder, or paprika to the batter for extra flavor.
  • Dredge the onion rings in flour: This will help the batter adhere to the onions.
  • Fry the onion rings in hot oil: Use a deep fryer or a large saucepan filled with oil. Heat the oil to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Cook the onion rings until golden brown: This will take about 2-3 minutes per side.
  • Drain the onion rings on paper towels: This will help remove any excess oil.
  • Serve the onion rings hot with your favorite dipping sauce: Some popular dipping sauces include ketchup, mayonnaise, ranch dressing, and barbecue sauce.

Conclusion:

Fried onion rings are a delicious and easy-to-make appetizer or side dish. By following these tips, you can make crispy, golden brown onion rings that are sure to be a hit with your family and friends. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy snack, give fried onion rings a try!
