Categories     dessert

Time 1h

Yield About 24 cookies

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 stick (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter, at room temperature
3/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
1/2 cup maple syrup
1 large egg, at room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
1 1/2 cups finely chopped pecans
Flaky sea salt, for sprinkling

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (or in a large bowl with a hand mixer), cream the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy, 3 to 4 minutes. With the mixer running on low speed, add the maple syrup in a slow, steady stream and mix to combine.
  • Scrape the bowl well, then add the egg and mix on medium speed until the mixture is well combined. Beat in the vanilla.
  • Add the flour, baking powder and fine salt to the mixer and pulse until it starts to combine, then scrape the bowl well and mix on low speed until uniformly combined. Add the pecans and mix until evenly incorporated.
  • Scoop the dough into 2 tablespoon-size rounds on the prepared baking sheets, staggering the rows and leaving at least 1 1/2 inches between each cookie to allow room to spread. Sprinkle flaky sea salt on the surface of each cookie. Transfer to the oven and bake until the cookies are lightly golden around the edges, 15 to 18 minutes. Transfer to a cooling rack to cool before serving.

I cannot, just cannot, allow myself to have even one of these as I'm setting them out, or I know there will be none left for the party. They're best eaten still a little warm (though be careful that they're not hot or everyone will have a burnt mouth) though still very good cold and, as with the olives, make a good present, bunged into a jar and tied with a ribbon or somesuch.

MAPLE PECAN WAFFLES

Maple Pecan Waffles image

This is a nice light and fluffy waffle--great for overnight guests. Or, make it for dessert and top it with fresh fruit and whipped cream. I found this in My Great Recipes. I didn't have any pecans so I substituted walnuts. For the maple flavoring I threw in a few squirts of maple syrup. If you have any left (might want to double the recipe), wrap in plastic and freeze. To reheat, just put the frozen waffle in the toaster (move over L'eggo My Ego).

Tips:

  • Mise en place: Before you start baking, make sure you have all of your ingredients and equipment ready to go. This will help you stay organized and avoid any scrambling.
  • Proof the dough properly: This is an important step that helps the dough rise and develop its full flavor. Be sure to follow the recipe's instructions carefully.
  • Use high-quality ingredients: The better the ingredients you use, the better your kolaches will taste. Look for fresh, high-quality flour, butter, eggs, and fillings.
  • Don't overfill the kolaches: Too much filling can cause the kolaches to burst open. Fill them just until the filling is level with the top of the dough.
  • Bake the kolaches until they are golden brown: This is a sign that they are done baking. Be careful not to overbake them, or they will become dry.
  • Let the kolaches cool before glazing them: This will help the glaze set properly.

Conclusion:

Maple pecan kolaches are a delicious and easy-to-make treat that are perfect for any occasion. They are a great way to use up leftover ham or turkey, and they can also be made with a variety of other fillings. Whether you are a seasoned baker or a beginner, you are sure to enjoy making and eating these kolaches. So what are you waiting for? Give them a try today!
