STATE FAIR LEMONADE

State Fair Lemonade image

I'm very excited to be showing you how to make real, authentic, vintage lemonade--the kind you might enjoy on a hot summer day at one of those stands at the state fair. Most of us make lemonade just out of lemon juice, but as you may know, the oils in the lemon peel contain a tremendous amount of flavor, and once you drink this, you won't want to go back to drinking it how you used to.

Yield Makes 6 (1/2-pint) jars

Number Of Ingredients 7

6 Meyer lemons (1 1/2 pounds)
4 cups water
4 cups sugar
Special equipment:
Cheesecloth
Kitchen string
6 (1/2-pint) Mason-type jars, sterilized

Steps:

  • Halve lemons crosswise and remove seeds. Tie seeds in a cheesecloth bag. Quarter each lemon half and thinly slice. Combine with bag of seeds and water in a 5-quart nonreactive heavy pot and let mixture stand, covered, at room temperature 24 hours.
  • Bring lemon mixture to a boil over moderate heat. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, until reduced to 4 cups, about 45 minutes. Stir in sugar and boil over moderate heat, stirring occasionally and skimming off any foam, until a teaspoon of mixture dropped on a cold plate gels, about 15 minutes.
  • Ladle hot marmalade into jars, filling to within 1/4 inch of top. Wipe rims with dampened cloth and seal jars with lids.
  • Put jars in a water-bath canner or on a rack set in a deep pot. Add enough hot water to cover jars by 1 inch and bring to a boil. Boil jars, covered, 5 minutes and transfer with tongs to a rack. Cool jars completely.

OLD-FASHIONED LEMONADE

Old-Fashioned Lemonade image

Ah, the taste of summer. This classic lemonade recipe is the one my mom used to make for me when I was little. It's the perfect combination of sweet and tart! When using a clear pitcher, adding a few of the juiced lemon halves makes it look prettier.

Provided by EJRIPPY

Categories     Drinks Recipes     Lemonade Recipes

Time 10m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 3

6 lemons
1 cup white sugar
6 cups cold water

Steps:

  • Juice the lemons to make 1 cup of juice. To make your labor easier, FIRMLY roll the lemons between your hand and counter top before cutting in half and juicing.
  • In a gallon pitcher combine 1 cup lemon juice, 1 cup sugar, and 6 cups cold water. Stir. Adjust water to taste. Chill and serve over ice.

Nutrition Facts : Calories 150.6 calories, Carbohydrate 44.9 g, Fat 0.3 g, Fiber 5.1 g, Protein 1.3 g, Sodium 3.2 mg, Sugar 33.3 g

Tips:

  • Choose the right lemons: For the best lemonade, use fresh, ripe lemons with a bright yellow color and a heavy feel. Avoid lemons that are green or have blemishes.
  • Zest your lemons: Zesting your lemons adds a bright, citrusy flavor to the lemonade. Use a microplane or zester to remove the zest from the lemons before juicing them.
  • Juice your lemons thoroughly: To get the most juice out of your lemons, roll them on a hard surface before juicing them. This will help to break down the membranes inside the lemons and release more juice.
  • Use filtered or spring water: Tap water can sometimes have a chlorine taste, which can interfere with the flavor of the lemonade. If possible, use filtered or spring water for the best results.
  • Sweeten to taste: The amount of sugar you add to your lemonade is a matter of personal preference. Start by adding a small amount of sugar and then taste the lemonade. Add more sugar, a little at a time, until the lemonade is sweet enough for your taste.
  • Chill the lemonade before serving: Chilled lemonade is more refreshing than warm lemonade. Chill the lemonade in the refrigerator for at least an hour before serving, or overnight for the best results.
  • Garnish with lemon slices or wedges: When serving the lemonade, garnish it with lemon slices or wedges. This adds a pop of color and flavor to the lemonade.

Conclusion:

Martha Stewart's extra lemony lemonade is a refreshing and delicious drink that is perfect for any occasion. With its bright, citrusy flavor and just the right amount of sweetness, this lemonade is sure to please everyone. Whether you are hosting a party or just want to enjoy a refreshing drink on a hot summer day, this lemonade is a great choice.
