Another recipe from the 1980 version of the Grace Evangelical Congregational Church cookbook from Muir, Pennsylvania that was given to me by my Nana when I became an adult. This is my mom's submission to the church cookbook. I generally hate onions but even I think these are great.

6 onions
1 egg, beaten
1 cup milk
1 cup flour
2 tablespoons flour
3 tablespoons oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
oil, enough to French fry

Steps:

  • Slice onions and separate into rings.
  • Combine beaten egg, milk, oil, flour and salt; stir until smooth.
  • Dip onion rings into batter.
  • Let excess batter drip off.
  • Fry for 2-3 minutes and place on paper towels to drain.
  • Freezing instructions: place in freezer bags and freeze. To reheat, place on tray in 375 degree oven for a few minutes.

1 1/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup milk, as needed
3/4 cup breadcrumbs, dry
seasoning salt
oil, for frying approx 1 qt

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a deep-fryer to 365 degrees F.
  • Separate the onion slices into rings, and set aside.
  • In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Dip the onion slices into the flour mixture until they are all coated; set aside.
  • Whisk the egg and milk into the flour mixture using a fork.
  • Dip the floured fings into the batter to coat, then place on a wire rack to drain until the batter stops dripping.
  • The wire rack may be placed over a sheet of aluminum foil for easier clean up.
  • Spread the bread crumbs out on a plate or shallow dish.
  • Place rings one at a time into the crumbs, and scoop the crumbs up over the rings to coat.

1 large onion, cut into 1/4-inch slices
1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup milk, or as needed
¾ cup dry bread crumbs
seasoned salt to taste
1 quart oil for frying, or as needed

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a deep-fryer to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C).
  • Separate the onion slices into rings, and set aside. In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Dip the onion slices into the flour mixture until they are all coated; set aside. Whisk the egg and milk into the flour mixture using a fork. When I was growing up, my dad enjoyed making these French fried onion rings. I'm not sure where the recipe came from, but it's been in Mom's recipe box for as long as I can remember. When I married 22 years ago, I copied some of Mom's recipes and this one was a must. Now I make this family favorite, and I'll expecially try to make it for Dad when he visits!

4 medium onions, cut into 1/4-inch slices
Cold water
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 large egg, beaten
2/3 cup whole milk
